The revised version of the Y-BOCS: responsivity and other psychometric  properties
CONCLUSION: The Y-BOCS-II severity scale is a reliable and valid instrument for accurately assessing the severity of OCD symptoms and for measuring treatment-induced change. This second version also has clinical and psychometric advantages over the YBOCS-I. When these findings are sufficiently replicated, use of the YBOCS-II as the new common standard seems recommendable.PMID:38380483 (Source: Tijdschrift voor Psychiatrie)

Comparative efficacy of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation protocols for obsessive-compulsive disorder: A network meta-analysis
CONCLUSION: rTMS targeting either the medial or lateral prefrontal cortices is a promising intervention for resistant OCD. There is a need to confirm these findings in large systematic studies.PMID:38377642 | DOI:10.1016/j.ajp.2024.103962 (Source: Asian Journal of Psychiatry)

Formative evaluation of an emergency department clinical decision support system for agitation symptoms: a study protocol
This study describes the formative evaluation of the health record embedded CDS tool. Under aim 1, the study will collect qualitative data to design and develop ED-TREAT using a contextual design approach and an iterative user-centred design process. Participants will include potential CDS users, that is, ED physicians, nurses, technicians, as well as patients with lived experience of restraint use for behavioural crisis management during an ED visit. We will use purposive sampling to ensure the full spectrum of perspectives until we reach thematic saturation. Next, under aim 2, the study will conduct a pilot, randomised c...

‘A tragic mistake’: Decision to close Duke University’s herbarium triggers furor
Discussions about a move have already begun. One possible recipient is the Botanical Research Institute of Texas. But it’s unlikely that the entire collection will go there, says Barbara Thiers, editor of Index Herbarorium , which tracks the world’s herbaria. The cost of shipping so many specimens and incorporating them into the institute’s system would be “prohibitive,” Thiers says. And whenever collections are split up, specimens tend to get lost, she warns. Many small herbaria and a few large ones have closed in the past 30 years. The latest high-profile casualty came in 2015, when the Universi...

Evaluation of the Whiteout During Fiberoptic Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing and Examination of Its Correlation with Pharyngeal Residue and Aspiration
AbstractTo evaluate the whiteout duration (WOd) and intensity (WOi) during Fiberoptic Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing (FEES) and examine their correlation with each other and age, gender, bolus consistencies, residue, and aspiration. Retrospective review of 75 videorecorded FEES.  The first swallow of each of the following were scored: “Empty” swallow, semisolids, solids, and liquids (International dysphagia diet standardization initiative (IDDSI) 4, 7, 0, respectively). Data scored for each swallow included WOd, WOi, Penetration and aspiration scale (PAS), Pharyngeal residue (Yale Pharyngeal Residue Severity Rati...

Return to Sport after Unicompartmental Knee Arthroplasty and Patello-femoral Arthroplasty
Data on sports/physical activity participation following unicompartmental knee arthroplasty (UKA) and patello-femoral arthroplasty (PFA) is variable and limited. The purpose of this study was to assess participations, outcomes, and limitations in sports following UKA and PFA. (Source: The Journal of Arthroplasty)

Telemedicine in patients with obsessive –compulsive disorder after deep brain stimulation: a case series
ConclusionThe group of patients showed improvement in their OCD symptoms within a 1-year follow-up period after DBS surgery, without compromising safety or benefits. This suggests that telemedicine could be a valuable supplementary tool when in-person visits are limited. (Source: Frontiers in Human Neuroscience)

Genetic polymorphism in HTR2A rs6313 is associated with internet addiction disorder
ConclusionThe present study demonstrates that rs6313 in HTR2A is associated with IAD, and that the T allele of rs6313 in HTR2A may be a risk factor for IAD. (Source: Frontiers in Psychiatry)

Influence of study characteristics, methodological rigour and publication bias on efficacy of pharmacotherapy in obsessive-compulsive disorder: a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomised, placebo-controlled trials
Conclusions Our findings reveal superiority of clomipramine over SSRIs, even after adjusting for risk of bias. Effect sizes may be attenuated when considering publication bias and methodological rigour, emphasising the importance of robust studies to guide clinical utility of OCD pharmacotherapy. Assessment of disparities in timely diagnosis and comprehensive workup of cognitive impairment between English and Spanish speakers
CONCLUSIONS: Non-English language preference is likely to be a contributing factor to timely diagnosis of cognitive impairment. In this study, Spanish language preference rather than Hispanic/Latino ethnicity was a significant predictor of a less timely diagnosis of cognitive impairment. Policy changes are needed to reduce barriers in cognitive disorders care for Spanish-speaking patients.PMID:38336573 | DOI:10.1016/j.jagp.2024.01.030 (Source: Am J Geriatr Psychia...)

Non-English language preference is part of the US syndemic for Latin/Hispanic people.
In this issue of the Journal, Silva-Rudberg et al.1 assessed the association between language preference and timely diagnosis and comprehensiveness of workup of cognitive impairment among English and Spanish speakers. They gathered data from the Yale-New Haven Health System in Connecticut obtained by retrospective chart review of the electronic medical records (EMR), 2017-2019. The sample consisted of patients who received a new diagnosis of mild cognitive impairment (MCI) (N  = 3,096) or dementia (N = 8,984) based on ICD-10 diagnostic codes.
