(No) Oral Health in Palliative Care Patients: Predisposing Factors and Treatment
CONCLUSIONS: Nonpharmacological strategies are effective in the treatment of xerostomia and tongue coating. More information to determine the effectiveness of the strategies in the treatment of mouth disorders is necessary.PMID:37981831 | DOI:10.1177/08258597231212305 (Source: Journal of Palliative Care)

Identification of immunological characteristics and cuproptosis-related molecular clusters in primary Sj ögren's syndrome
CONCLUSION: In this study, we systematically analyzed the association between pSS and cuproptosis, established a predictive model that screened for high-risk genes linked to the advancement of pSS, and explored the pathogenic mechanisms and novel therapeutic strategies for pSS, targeting EED, CBL and NFU1.PMID:37984252 | DOI:10.1016/j.intimp.2023.111251 (Source: International Immunopharmacology)

NTCP modelling of xerostomia after radiotherapy for oropharyngeal cancer using the PRO-CTCAE and CTCAE scoring systems at different time-points post-RT
Head and neck cancer accounts for 3 –4 % of all cancers and the vast majority of them is oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (OPSCC) [1,2]. Since 2000, the rate of diagnosed OPSCC has increased by about 66 % [3]. There is an increasing incidence of OPSCC with human papillomavirus (HPV) infection of the oropharyngeal mucosa [4– 6]. The 5-year survival rate for OPSCC has been steadily increasing over time (55 % to over 72 % since 1992) [3]. Although the cancer control and survival is excellent in HPV-associated OPSCC, standard CRT regimens produce substantial toxicity [7]. (Source: Physica Medica: European Journal of Medical Physics)

Mitochondrial malfunction mediates impaired cholinergic Ca < sup > 2+ < /sup > signalling and submandibular salivary gland dysfunction in diabetes
In this study, we show that diabetic animals exhibit severe xerostomia, evident by reduced saliva flow rate, diminished total protein content, and decreased amylase activity in the saliva secreted by submandibular glands. These impairments remained resistant to exogenous cholinergic stimulation. In submandibular acinar cells in diabetes, the intracellular Ca2+ signals evoked by cholinergic stimulation were reduced and delayed, caused by malfunctioning mitochondria. Upon initiation of cholinergic-evoked Ca2+ signals, mitochondria accumulate higher Ca2+ and fail to redistribute Ca2+ influx and facilitate the store-operated C...

Personalized neck irradiation guided by sentinel lymph node biopsy in patients with squamous cell carcinoma of the oropharynx, larynx or hypopharynx with a clinically negative neck: (Chemo)radiotherapy to the PRIMary tumor only. Protocol of the PRIMO study
DISCUSSION: If this trial demonstrates that the experimental treatment is non-inferior to the standard treatment in terms of regional recurrence and is superior in terms of xerostomia-related quality of life, this will become the new standard of care.PMID:37965060 | PMC:PMC10641572 | DOI:10.1016/j.ctro.2023.100696 (Source: Cancer Control)

The impact of submandibular glands protection on xerostomia as monitored by diffusion-weighted imaging in nasopharyngeal carcinoma patients
ConclusionsSMG protection has a  great impact on the functional retention of PGs and SLGs, resulting in alleviating xerostomia and improving quality of life.Trial registrationThe clinical trial was also registered with the Chinese Clinical Study Registry (registered number: ChiCTR1900024328, Date: July  6, 2019; URL:https://www.chictr.org.cn/showproj.aspx?proj=40726) (Source: Strahlentherapie und Onkologie)

Image Case Report: Glandular Swelling
The Case A 47-year-old woman presented with a one-year history of bilateral submandibular gland swelling, mild symptoms of xerostomia and xerophthalmia and arthralgias in her fingers. A review of systems was otherwise unremarkable. On physical examination, her submandibular glands on both sides were enlarged and had a firm texture. Her parotid glands were normal, as...
