Oral micro-electronic platform for temperature and humidity monitoring
Sci Rep. 2023 Dec 2;13(1):21277. doi: 10.1038/s41598-023-48379-9.ABSTRACTIntraoral theranostics, the integration of diagnostics and therapeutics within the oral cavity, is gaining significant traction. This pioneering approach primarily addresses issues like xerostomia (dry mouth), commonly resulting from cancer treatment, with a specific focus on monitoring temperature and humidity. This paper introduces the innovative Intra-Oral Portable Micro-Electronic (IOPM) fluidic theranostic device platform. It leverages conventional dental spoons by incorporating advanced sensors for precise measurements of oral temperature and hu...

Post-radiation xerostomia therapy with allogeneic mesenchymal stromal stem cells in patients with head and neck cancer: study protocol for phase I clinical trial
DISCUSSION: The use of allogeneic MSCs from umbilical cord tissue represents an innovative approach for the treatment of xerostomia after radiation. Due to the noninvasive collection procedure, flexibility of cryobanking, and biological advantages, xerostomia therapy using allogeneic MSCs from umbilical cord tissue may have an advantage over other similar therapies.PMID:38038413 | DOI:10.2478/raon-2023-0052 (Source: Cancer Control)

Mitophagy induction improves salivary gland stem/progenitor cell function by reducing senescence after irradiation
Head and neck cancer (HNC) is the seventh most prevalent cancer worldwide [1]. The primary treatment approach for the majority of HNC patients involves radiotherapy, often in conjunction with surgery and chemotherapy [1]. Unfortunately, radiotherapy leads to a decline in a patient's quality of life, primarily due to radiation-induced damage of normal tissues [2]. Xerostomia, or dry mouth syndrome, is a side effect which results from the co-irradiation of healthy salivary glands [3]. Consequently, patients suffer from impaired speech, dental issues, and difficulties with swallowing and speaking [3]. (Source: Radiotherapy and Oncology)

Medication impact on oral health in schizophrenia
CONCLUSIONS: Literature clearly shows higher caries and periodontal disease in schizophrenic patients. However, overall, there is scarce literature about the potential influence of drugs in these disorders. Health professionals should be aware of this issue in order to implement adequate preventive measures in this vulnerable population.PMID:37992139 | DOI:10.4317/medoral.26061 (Source: Medicina Oral, Patologia Oral y Cirugia Bucal)
