Study: Snacking On Nuts Can Reduce Risk Of Heart Disease, Cancer
LONDON (CBS) – If you’re looking for a healthy snack, nuts might be the answer. A new study from European researchers in the journal BMC Medicine says eating a handful of nuts a day can cut down on several health risks. Data from more than 800,000 people who ate all kinds of nuts, including hazelnuts, walnuts and peanuts, shows they cut their risk of dying from heart disease by nearly 30 percent and cancer by 15 percent. The risk of premature death was also 22 percent lower for people who ate nuts. “It’s quite a substantial effect for such a small amount of food,” study co-author Dagfinn Aune said. Even though so...

New evidence links inflammation and increased prostate cancer risk
UCLA Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer CenterDr. Andrew Goldstein of UCLA uses walnuts to explain his latest research about chronic inflammation and it ’s link to increased risk for prostate cancer. FINDINGSUCLA researchers have discovered a previously unrecognized type of progenitor cell that, though rare in most regions of the human prostate, is found in uncommonly high numbers in inflamed areas of the gland. These progenitor cells have the ability to initiate prostate cancer in response to genetic changes. The study results suggest inflammation increases overall risk for the disease by increasing the available pool of pro...

FYI, Almonds Are Not Nuts. And Neither Are A Lot Of Other 'Nuts.'
We all know almonds are a healthy snack and a great dessert ingredient. But get this: almonds are not nuts. They’re seeds of a fruit. More specifically, they’re seeds of the almond fruit, which grows on a tree and is very similar to a peach, botanically speaking. When the almond fruit is ripe, we remove its flesh and shell, then eat the small kernel inside. Check it out: Here’s why almonds are not nuts.  In the botanical world, a nut is a dry, hard-shelled fruit. But as you can see, almonds have a fleshy outer layer. Therefore they’re technically not nuts, but a di...

If you're introducing a new cat to the family, or your kitty is having litterbox issues and you're thinking about switching litters, you may find the following cat litter primer helpful. Common Types of Cat Litter • Clumping clay. This type of litter is typically made from bentonite, which is a highly absorbent clay that forms into solid clumps when your cat urinates. It's As Healthy To Eat Bugs As It Is To Eat Steak, Study Says
By Amanda MacMillan Think nothing can take the place of a juicy, perfectly cooked burger? Try a plate of fried grasshoppers. Okay, so they won’t exactly taste the same — and it may be tough to even stomach the thought of munching on bugs. But experts say that nutritionally speaking, they’re a good substitute for beef, and may be a valuable food source of the future. The idea of eating insects isn’t new. They’ve long been included in traditional diets of cultures around the world, and a 2013 report from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations noted that more than 1,900 insec...

Cholesterol: The Myth of Heart Disease
The next time your doctor says you need to lower your LDL cholesterol so you don’t have a heart attack or stroke, show him the results of the Northern Manhattan Study. The researchers that conducted the study found that higher LDL cholesterol was linked to LOWER stroke risk.1 And another study published this year reviewed research on nearly 70,000 people. The authors of that study found NO LINK between LDL cholesterol and premature deaths in people over 60 from heart disease.2 LDL Isn’t “Bad” Cholesterol This backs up what I’ve been saying for two decades! LDL isn’t “bad” cho...

In (Sly) Defense of (Junk) Food?
Michael Pollan, a colleague I very much admire, wrote In Defense of Food. According to my on-line detractors (a.k.a., trolls), I am the author of the sequel: in sly defense of junk food. We’ll examine the case momentarily. First things first, though. I recognize the liabilities of rebutting trolls this way. For one thing, even thoroughly justified acts of self-defense can make one look, well, defensive. For another, since trolls mostly attract only the interest and attention of one another, there’s a good chance none of their vitriol has come to your attention in the first place. I can accommodate that by address...

Sugar: My Position
Sugar seems to be everywhere these days, and I don’t just mean in the copiously over-sweetened standard American diet (“SAD”). I mean in the news about diet, too. Partly, this is as it should be, as one of the principal liabilities of a dreadfully junk-laden and hypocrisy-laden diet, literally engineered to subjugate the health of the many to the profit of the few, gets the attention it deserves. Partly, though, it is the result of a well orchestrated, well funded effort by those with ties to the beef industry, and/or interest in sticking butter in your coffee, to divert your attention from the ...

Arkansas Hospitals Face Lawsuits After Refusing Insurance
Jessica Mounce of Lowell had health insurance, but Northwest Medical Center-Springdale wouldn’t accept it when she came to its emergency room in late 2013 after being rear-ended in an auto accident. Instead, the hospital filed a medical lien against the 24-year-old elementary school teacher in hopes of collecting $6,100 from the at-fault driver’s insurance rather than a fraction of that amount that Mounce’s insurance would have paid. Mounce, represented by Fayetteville attorney Shawn Daniels, sued the hospital in federal court last year. It turned out to be the first of at least four complaints in Arkansa...
