"One a Day Keeps the Prison Away": Understanding the Experiences of Individuals Convicted of Sexual Offences Receiving Anti-Androgens for the Treatment of Problematic Sexual Arousal
In this study, we interviewed all individuals in prison taking anti-androgens for the treatment of problematic sexual arousal following convictions for sexual offences in England at the time of data collection (N = 10). Using a phenomenologically oriented thematic analysis, we established themes pertaining to "Differing needs: Motivations for treatment," "Medication as a risk management strategy," and how the medication helped the men in their pursuit of "Discovering a 'new me'." This work contributes important knowledge to inform the development of ethical and effective prescribing of anti-androgen medication with this po...

Codesigned online cognitive bias modification of interpretations for anxiety and depression in children: study protocol of a randomised controlled trial
This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness and acceptability of an online CBM-I intervention (Mindmaster) for children with symptom scores of anxiety or depression above a borderline or clinical threshold. The intervention has been codesigned with children, parents and mental health professionals to promote user engagement. Methods and analysis The study is a randomised controlled trial, with two parallel arms. Participants are 143 children aged 8–10 years with scores of anxiety and/or depressive symptoms above a borderline or clinical threshold. They will be allocated to either the intervention group or the wait...

Prostate-Specific Antigen Screening and 15-Year Prostate Cancer Mortality: A Secondary Analysis of the CAP Randomized Clinical Trial
CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE: In this secondary analysis of a randomized clinical trial, a single invitation for PSA screening compared with standard practice without routine screening reduced prostate cancer deaths at a median follow-up of 15 years. However, the absolute reduction in deaths was small.TRIAL REGISTRATION: isrctn.org Identifier: ISRCTN92187251.PMID:38581198 | DOI:10.1001/jama.2024.4011 (Source: Cancer Control)

Trinuclear ruthenium(II) polypyridyl complexes: Evaluation as photosensitizers for enhanced cervical cancer treatment
J Inorg Biochem. 2024 Mar 26;256:112545. doi: 10.1016/j.jinorgbio.2024.112545. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTTrinuclear ruthenium(II) polypyridyl complexes anchored to benzimidazole-triazine / trisamine scaffolds were investigated as photosensitizers for photodynamic therapy. The trinuclear complexes were noted to produce a significant amount of singlet oxygen in both DMF and aqueous media, are photostable and show appreciable emission quantum yields (ɸem). In our experimental setting, despite the moderate phototoxic activity in the HeLa cervical cancer cell line, the phototoxic indices (PI) of the trinuclear complexes ar...

Applicability and impact of the COMPASS trial in a Canadian population of patients with atherosclerotic disease
CONCLUSIONS: In a real-world population of 4.4 million adults, there are roughly 20,000 new cases of ASVCD diagnosed yearly, with ∼40% being eligible for the addition of low-dose rivaroxaban therapy to antiplatelet therapy. The theoretical implementation of dual antithrombotic treatment in this population could result in a substantial reduction in cardiovascular morbidity and mortality.PMID:38582637 | DOI:10.1016/j.atherosclerosis.2024.117486 (Source: Atherosclerosis)

Use of surgical procedure manager to standardise operation steps and monitor surgeon performance in open repair of inguinal hernia
ConclusionsThe use of SPM did not significantly prolong the operation time and produce comparable operative outcomes in open hernia repair. It provided the additional advantage of standardising operation steps and monitoring the performance of surgical trainees during their training. (Source: Surgical Practice)
