'I was going into it blind': Nearest Relatives, legal literacy, and the Mental Health Act 1983
This article examines this issue through focussing on the experiences of Nearest Relatives, who are given rights and powers during Mental Health Act 1983 (MHA) assessments for compulsory admission in England and Wales. Interviews with nineteen Nearest Relatives in England were conducted and were thematically analysed. Three themes were identified. First, NRs spoke about their awareness and knowledge of the role. They predominantly reported negative experiences in which they received no or little information. They also reported that professionals assumed they possessed legal knowledge, and their legal knowledge was largely ...

Recommendations for laboratory workflow that better support centralised amalgamation of genomic variant data: findings from CanVIG-UK national molecular laboratory survey
Conclusion The survey responses illustrate heterogeneous laboratory workflow for preparation of genomic variant data from local LIMS for centralised submission. Workflow is often labour-intensive and inefficient, involving multiple manual steps which introduce opportunities for error. These survey findings and adoption of the concomitant recommendations may support improvement in laboratory dataflows, better facilitating submission of data for central amalgamation. Prevalence and temporal relationship of clinical co-morbidities in idiopathic dystonia: a UK linkage-based study
This study suggests an increased rate of specific co-morbid clinical disorders both pre- and p ost-dystonia diagnosis which should be considered during clinical assessment of those with dystonia to enable optimum symptomatic management. (Source: Journal of Neurology)

Pressure grows to ditch controversial rodent test in depression studies
For the past few decades, scientists studying candidate antidepressant drugs have had a convenient animal test: how long a rodent dropped in water keeps swimming. Invented in 1977 , the forced swim test (FST) hinged on the idea that a depressed animal would give up quickly. It seemed to work: Antidepressants and electroconvulsive therapy often made the animal try harder. The test remains popular, appearing in about 600 papers per year . But researchers have recently begun to question the assumption that the test really gauges depression and is a good predictor of human responses to drugs. Oppositi...

Agreement about Availability of Alternative Treatments for Innovative Drugs Assessed by the EMA and HTA Organizations
In conclusion, although there was high overall agreement between the EMA and HTA organizations about whether alternative treatments exist, there were differences in the types of treatment considered. Parallel joint scientific consultations could inform drug developers about relevant alternative treatments to facilitate patient access to innovative drugs.PMID:38505926 | DOI:10.1002/cpt.3252 (Source: Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics)

TAT-HUM: Trajectory analysis toolkit for human movements in Python
Behav Res Methods. 2024 Mar 19. doi: 10.3758/s13428-024-02378-4. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTHuman movement trajectories can reveal useful insights regarding the underlying mechanisms of human behaviors. Extracting information from movement trajectories, however, can be challenging because of their complex and dynamic nature. The current paper presents a Python toolkit developed to help users analyze and extract meaningful information from the trajectories of discrete rapid aiming movements executed by humans. This toolkit uses various open-source Python libraries, such as NumPy and SciPy, and offers a collection of comm...

Investigating Length of Stay Patterns and Its Predictors in the South Wales Trauma Network
CONCLUSION: Our finding supports prior evidence indicating elderly people are vulnerable to longer stays. Moreover, concerning the types of admission wards, patients admitted to rehabilitation wards who underwent more than 2 hospitalisations also faced an increased risk of prolonged stay. Based on these results, policymakers and healthcare providers should contemplate expanding the allocation of medical resources to this demographic to mitigate the length of stay and optimise associated healthcare costs.PMID:38505372 | PMC:PMC10949546 | DOI:10.1177/27536351241237866 (Source: Adv Data)

The perceived helpfulness and acceptability of a bespoke psychological therapy service for registered nurses experiencing psychological distress: A qualitative study
CONCLUSION: Participants attempted to live up to an idealized image of a nurse, generating self-stigmatizing beliefs that negatively affected their mental health. The psychological therapy service enabled participants to put their roles into perspective, that is, separate themselves from their role, be vulnerable, and develop confidence and adaptive coping strategies. Participants valued the minimal barriers and ease of access to support.IMPLICATIONS FOR THE PROFESSION AND/OR PATIENT CARE: The complex relationship between nurse identity and the challenges of the workplace needs to be central to nurse education. Nurses can ...

How the training pathways and capacity of rural physicians inform their scope of practice: A qualitative study examining the experiences of Australian and international medical graduates in South-East New South Wales, Australia
CONCLUSION: Doctors' scope of practice is informed by their pathways into rural practice. Australian medical graduates may not gain adequate competence during expedited training programs to confidently undertake extended clinical activities. International medical graduates, however lacked the opportunities and support, to utilise their expertise in rural practice. Complementarily utilising the expertise and commitment of both AMGs and IMGs may synergistically address workforce shortages.PMID:38504461 | DOI:10.1111/ajr.13105 (Source: The Australian Journal of Rural Health)
