Feeding strategies for Sporosarcina pasteurii cultivation unlock more efficient production of ureolytic biomass for MICP
This study focusses on fed-batch cultivation of S. pasteurii DSM33. The study distinguishes between limited fed-batch cultivation and extended batch cultivation. Simply feeding glucose to a S. pasteurii culture does not seem beneficial. However, it was exploited that S. pasteurii is auxotrophic for two vitamins and amino acids. Limited fed-batch cultivation was accomplished by feeding the necessary vitamins or amino acids to a culture lacking them. Feeding nicotinic acid to a nicotinic acid deprived culture resulted in a 24% increase of the specific urease activity compared to a fed culture without nicotinic acid limitatio...

Influence of intensity ultrasound on rheological properties and bioactive compounds of araticum (Annona crassiflora) juice
Ultrason Sonochem. 2024 Apr 3;105:106868. doi: 10.1016/j.ultsonch.2024.106868. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe use of extracts rich in bioactive compounds is becoming increasingly common in the food, cosmetics, and pharmaceutical industries for the production of functional products. Araticum is a potential fruit to be analyzed due to its content of phenolic compounds, carotenoids and vitamins, with antioxidant properties. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the effect of ultrasound on total phenolic compounds, total carotenoids, ascorbic acid, color, turbidity and rheology in araticum juice. Response surface metho...

Nutrition Assessment and Management in Celiac Disease
Celiac disease (CeD) is the most common immune condition affecting the gastrointestinal tract; it is triggered by gluten and the only available treatment is a strict gluten-free diet (GFD). Therefore, for patients with CeD, adopting a GFD is not a lifestyle choice. The major problem is that a GFD is restrictive and, like all restrictive diets, it has the potential for adverse nutritional outcomes, especially if adopted for a long term. It is well known that GFD can be nutritionally inadequate and is frequently associated with vitamin and mineral deficiencies; it is also associated with excessive sugar and fat intake, parti...

Evaluation of modified fixed dose four-factor prothrombin complex concentrate for warfarin reversal
AbstractNon-activated four-factor prothrombin complex concentrate (4  F-PCC) has emerged as the preferred reversal strategy for patients on warfarin with life-threatening bleeding. Current dosing recommendations for 4 F-PCC require pre-treatment international normalized ratio (INR) and bodyweight values, resulting in ordering and administration delays. Studies have shown that alternative dosing regimens are safe and efficacious. This retrospective, single-center, pre- and post-protocol analysis was conducted to assess the efficacy of a pharmacist driven modified fixed-dose 4 F-PCC regimen versus package insert weight- a...

Molecules, Vol. 29, Pages 1642: Phytochemical Constituent Analysis of Phyllanthus emblica L. Fruit Nanoherbals by LC-HRMS and Their Antimutagenic Activity and Teratogenic Effects
This study aims to determine the phytochemical constituents of Phyllanthus emblica L. fruit nanoherbals by LC-HRMS analysis and their antimutagenic activity and teratogenic effects. The study commenced by producing nanoherbal extracts from P. emblica fruit. The phytochemical composition of these extracts was then analyzed using LC-HRMS. The nanoherbal extracts were also tested for their ability to prevent mutations, as indicated by a reduction in micronuclei observed in mouse femur bone marrow smear preparations. The teratogenicity test involved administering the P. emblica fruit nanoherbal at 100, 500, and 1000 mg/kg BW d...

Use of complementary medicine and its association with SARS-CoV-2 vaccination during the COVID-19 pandemic: a longitudinal cohort study
CONCLUSION: While complementary medicine is increasingly used, it is rarely discussed with primary care physicians. Complementary medicine use, especially for COVID-19 prevention, is associated with COVID-19 vaccination status. Communication between physicians, patients, and complementary medicine therapists is encouraged to facilitate a truly holistic approach to making a shared decision based on the best available information.PMID:38579302 | DOI:10.57187/s.3505 (Source: Swiss Medical Weekly)

The effect of administering preprocedural VITamin K on the international normalized ratio in patients anticoagulated with ACEnocoumarol (VITKACE-study)
CONCLUSIONS: Using oral vitamin K while patients continue acenocoumarol intake is an effective way to adequately lower INR before an invasive procedure. Low amount of bleeding complications and absence of thromboembolic complications suggest that this is a safe strategy. The INR-values returned gradually to therapeutic range after the procedure, probably contributing to the observed low bleeding rate.PMID:38580096 | DOI:10.1016/j.jtha.2024.03.016 (Source: Thrombosis and Haemostasis)

Energy drink consumption among medical students in Jordan - prevalence, attitudes, and associated factors: a cross-sectional study
CONCLUSION: The prevalence of energy drink consumption among medical students in Jordan is high, with factors such as social influences, lifestyle behaviors, and academic pressure being significant contributors. This study highlights the need for interventions to promote healthy behaviors and raise awareness about the potential harms of ED among medical students.PMID:38576977 | PMC:PMC10990385 | DOI:10.1097/MS9.0000000000001791 (Source: Annals of Medicine)

The Hepatocurative Effects of < em > Zanthoxylum zanthoxyloides < /em > Alkaloids on Tetrachloromethane-Induced Hepatotoxicity on Albino Rats
Indian J Clin Biochem. 2024 Apr;39(2):188-196. doi: 10.1007/s12291-022-01095-z. Epub 2022 Nov 12.ABSTRACTThe study investigated the hepatocurative activity of the bulk alkaloids of Zanthoxylum zanthoxyloides in a tetrachloromethane (CCl4)-induced hepatotoxicity model in rats. The hepatocurative activity of the alkaloids at 200, 400 and 600 mg/kg doses was demonstrated by the assay of both enzymic and non-enzymic parameters. Sections of the liver were also subjected to histological examinations. Mapping techniques and data visualization approaches were adopted in finding relationships between the enzymic and non-enzymic par...
