Vitamin B5 supplementation enhances intestinal development and alters microbes in weaned piglets
This study explored the effects of different vitamin B5 (VB5) levels on intestinal growth and function of weaned piglets. Twenty-one piglets (7.20 ± 1.11 kg) were included in a 28-day feeding trial with three treatments, including 0 mg/kg (L-VB5), 10 mg/kg (Control) and 50 mg/kg (H-VB5) of VB5 supplement. The results showed that: Large intestine weight/body weight was the highest in H-VB5 group, Control and H-VB5 groups had significantly higher villus height and villus height/crypt depth than the L-VB5 in the ileum (p < .05). Goblet cells (ileal crypt) and endocrine cells (ileal villus) significantly increased in Contr...

Photoperiodism of Diapause Induction in the Silkworm, < em > Bombyx mori < /em >
This article provides a comprehensive review of literature on the silkworm PR, starting from early works on population to recent studies uncovering the molecular mechanism. Makita Kogure (1933) conducted extensive research on the PR, presenting a pioneering paper on insect photoperiodism. In the 1970s and 80s, artificial diets were developed, and the influence of nutrition on PR was well documented. The photoperiodic photoreceptor has been investigated from organ to molecular level in the silkworm. Culture experiments demonstrated that the photoperiodic induction can be programmed in an isolated brain (Br)-subesophageal ga...

Accumulated LPS induced by colitis altered the activities of vitamin D-metabolizing hydroxylases and decreased the generation of 25-hydroxyvitamin D
Chem Biol Interact. 2024 Apr 6:110997. doi: 10.1016/j.cbi.2024.110997. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTIt is generally accepted that low vitamin D (VD) levels are associated with a high prevalence factor for Inflammatory bowel disease(IBD). IBD patients have observed higher levels of lipopolysaccharide(LPS), ALT, and AST than healthy people. Gut-derived LPS causes inflammatory injury in the liver and kidney. The VD-metabolizing mechanism is involved in the liver and kidney, which means IBD might impact VD metabolism. However, whether IBD affects VD metabolism has not been studied. In vitro LPS resulted in decreased CYP2R1 in...

Evaluating the renoprotective effects of omega-3-6-9 against cisplatin-induced nephrotoxicity in mice
This study explored the renoprotective potential of omega-3-6-9 when co-administered with cisplatin in a mice model. We divided adult mice into five groups: a control group received 0.5 ml of liquid paraffin; a cisplatin-only group; two groups were treated with low (50 mg/kg) and high (100 mg/kg) doses of omega-3-6-9 plus cisplatin; and a final group received vitamin E before cisplatin administration. The administration of omega-3-6-9 significantly decreased pro-inflammatory modulators and kidney function markers such as TNF-α, IL-1β, blood urea nitrogen, and creatinine, indicating potential renoprotective effects. Our r...

Association between prenatal vitamin D deficiency with dental caries in infants and children: a systematic review and meta-analysis
Prenatal vitamin D (PVD) is a vital micronutrient for dental caries (DCs). The association between prenatal vitamin D deficiencies (PVDD) and DCs in children has been conflicting in different reports. This met... (Source: BMC Pregnancy and Childbirth)

Acute oxalate nephropathy: exploring the role of excess dietary oxalate intake
We report here two cases presenting as unexplained AKI which were confirmed histologically to be due to acute oxalate nephropathy. Dietary oxalate or its precursor vitamin C was the cause of oxalate exposure in both of these cases. While one patient recovered, another continued to need dialysis and succumbed to underlying metastatic cancer. This cause should be suspected in all patients presenting with unexplained AKI, and detailed history about dietary intake of oxalate or vitamin C should be inquired. (Source: CEN Case Reports)

Molecules, Vol. 29, Pages 1675: Citrus limon Wastes from Part of the Eastern Cape Province in South Africa: Medicinal, Sustainable Agricultural, and Bio-Resource Potential
This study obtained the chemical profiles of the essential oils (EOs) of C. limon wastes (the peel and leaves), evaluated their medicinal value as antioxidants, their potential for sustainable use in agriculture as an insecticide for post-harvest preservation of grains, and their potential as a bioresource in livestock feed formulations. The EOs were isolated from C. limon leaves and peel using a hydro-distillation method on a Clevenger apparatus. The oil constituents were identified using the gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) hyphenated technique. The oils were evaluated for their in vitro antioxidant activity ...

Association of Serum Folate and Vitamin B < sub > 12 < /sub > Concentrations with Obesity in Chinese Children and Adolescents
CONCLUSION: Higher serum vitamin B 12 concentrations, but not serum folate concentrations, were associated with lower odds of childhood obesity. Children and adolescents with high levels of vitamin B 12 and folate were less likely to be obese.PMID:38582989 | DOI:10.3967/bes2024.028 (Source: Biomedical and Environmental Sciences : BES)
