Oxidized-LDL Induces Metabolic Dysfunction in Retinal Pigment Epithelial Cells
In this study, we focused on oxidized low-density lipoprotein (ox-LDL), a major constituent of drusen that accumulates in the retina of patients with AMD, and investigated whether it could be a causative factor for metabolic alterations in retinal pigment epithelial (RPE) cells. We found that prolonged exposure to ox-LDL induced changes in fatty acid β-oxidation (FAO), OXPHOS, and glycolytic activity and increased the mitochondrial reactive oxygen species production in RPE cells. Notably, the effects on metabolic alterations varied with the concentration and duration of ox-LDL treatment. In addition, we addressed the limi...

RPE65-Associated Retinal Dystrophies: Phenotypes and Treatment Effects with Voretigene Neparvovec
Klin Monbl Augenheilkd. 2024 Mar;241(3):259-265. doi: 10.1055/a-2227-3671. Epub 2024 Mar 20.ABSTRACTRetinal dystrophies linked to the RPE65 gene are mostly fast-progressing retinal diseases, with childhood onset of night blindness and progressive visual loss up to the middle adult age. Rare phenotypes linked to this gene are known with congenital stationary night blindness or slowly progressing retinitis pigmentosa, as well as an autosomal dominant c.1430A>G (p.Asp477Gly) variant. This review gives an overview of the current knowledge of the clinical phenotypes, as well as experience with the efficacy and safety of the ...

Retinal hemorrhages with Valsalva during laser photocoagulation in previously treated ROP
An 8-month-old girl born at gestational age 22+5 weeks and birth weight 470 grams received three intravitreal anti-VEGF injections for recurrent Type 1 ROP at postmenstrual age (PMA) 32 weeks, 40+3 weeks, and 50 weeks. At 60 weeks PMA, she had persistent posterior vascular tortuosity and extensive peripheral avascular retina. The decision was made to perform retinal laser photocoagulation under general endotracheal anesthesia. (Source: American Journal of Ophthalmology)
