Could any1 give their opinion/views on the Psychiatry Residency at Carilion Clinic in Roanoke VA? I don't see many experiences of this program on the forum. The PD is now a male, not female like a previous post from 2017... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Virginia Tech vs Cooper Medical School
Career Goals: Either go into primary care or psychiatry and then go into private practice and get involved in a free clinic on the side. Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine (accepted) Pros - no in-house exams and retired NBMEs as preclinical exams - 1 week off (technically 10 days with weekends) at end of each block In addition to winter breaks (8 blocks in first two years) - Very small cohorts (~45-50 per class), so better faculty to student ratio - Big research focus... Virginia Tech vs Medical College of Georgia
Virginia Tech Pros (+++) Stronger match on average (++) Research is heavily emphasized in the curriculum although it seems like you kind of have your hand held through it which is annoying. There's also a research course you have to take as well in preclinical, and you have to take exams about research? It seems silly and I'm sure I'd hate it. Still, for competitive residencies in the P/F step 1 era, research is sure to be even more important, so it's in the pro column. (+)... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Virginia Tech Carillon vs Drexel vs Rosalind Franklin (OPHTHALMOLOGY INTEREST)
Hello, I need help deciding between these three schools, with my prime interest being to match ophthalmology. I feel like Virginia Tech carillon is a better school than Drexel and RFU due to its small class size, NBME exams, pass/fail curriculum, research integration, the fact that it has its own hospital, etc. However, if I am strictly interested in ophthalmology, would it be unwise to choose Virginia Tech over Drexel or Rosalind Franklin? Those two schools have ophthalmology departments... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Wayne State vs Virginia Tech
Wayne State Pros More established school, solid match list (likely want to match in different state) Less mandatory classes Actually in the city so more things to do (although it is Detroit) Strong clinical experience with diverse patient population Many research opportunities, student organizations, programs due to bigger school Cons Not true P/F Bigger school with less organized admin so less support More expensive (out of state tuition ~400k)... Loyola Stritch vs. Virginia Tech
I'm currently holding out for my top choice medical school to get back to me, as I'm waitlisted there. But for now, I have to have a plan B and I'm really torn between both these schools. Loyola Stritch PROS: - Chicago is an amazing city and its definitely easier for me to get home via plane - I LOVED them on interview day; great vibe - Students seem really really happy here - Beautiful facilities, all close to one another - I'm Jewish and Chicago has a huge Jewish population which... Help meeeeeee: Wake Forest vs. Virginia Tech
A bit about me: 26 y.o. male, grew up and went to college in small Northeastern towns (don’t feel need to be in large city), extensive research experience, love the outdoors (running, mountain biking, soccer), completely unsure of specialty at this time Wake Forest School of Medicine Pros More well established (founded 1902), more NIH funding, more well known US News Research Ranking #47 Likely better matching for residency due to points above TRUE pass/fail... Please help! Virginia Tech Carillon vs. Penn State
Virginia Tech Carillion: Pros: -cute city -a week off after every block !! -small class means no one is competing for opportunities -strong research component as part of curriculum -NBME exams -low cost of living -they give their students a $15,000 scholarship the first year, and I believe $5000 the next 3 years -P/F pre-clinical years Cons: - More required class time compared to other schools - I actually got to visit and there seemed to be a lack of diversity in both the student body and... Virginia Tech Carillion vs TCU
I have been blessed to be accepted to both of these schools and am on the waitlist at a few more. In the time being, I am trying to decide which program I would attend if I were not accepted off of any waitlists. I really like both options and they are very similar in a lot of ways. I included a lot of pros and cons for each school but the main differences are price, location, social scene, and match data. I will be moving from out of state with my wife either way, and we think we will be... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)
