Fatal tick-borne encephalitis virus infection in Dalmatian puppy-dogs after putative vector independent transmission
Vet Q. 2024 Dec;44(1):1-7. doi: 10.1080/01652176.2024.2338385. Epub 2024 Apr 10.ABSTRACTIn a retrospective metatranscriptomics study, we identified tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV) to be the causative agent for a fatal non-suppurative meningoencephalitis in a three-week-old Dalmatian puppy in Switzerland. Further investigations showed that the two other littermates with similar signs and pathological lesions were also positive for TBEV. By using an unbiased approach of combining high-throughput sequencing (HTS) and bioinformatics we were able to solve the etiology and discover an unusual case of TBEV in three young pup...

The Use of Guanfacine to Mediate Anxiety-related Reactivity and Reduce Associated Agonistic Behavior in Two Pigtail Macaques ( < em > Macaca nemestrina < /em > )
We present data from 2 pigtail macaques (Macaca nemestrina): an intact adult male housed in a breeding group, and an experimentally naive adult female living in a research setting with her social partner. Baseline behavioral assessments suggested that both macaques showed extreme responses to external stressors that triggered them to aggress social partners often leading to wounding that required veterinary intervention. Both animals were tracked during the course of 1 y. Once treated regularly with guanfacine, both animals showed significant reduction in their agonistic behavior and the rate at which they wounded other an...

Comparison of blood profiles between housed and grazing Korean indigenous cattle (Hanwoo)
The objective of this study was to compare the hematology profiles of Korean indigenous cattle (Hanwoo) raised in a barn (housed) or on pasture (grazing). Our findings showed significant differences in the red blood cell (RBC) profiles of these 2 groups. When compared to cattle raised in a barn, a significant decrease in hematocrit (P = 0.000), hemoglobin (P = 0.000), and red blood cells (RBCs) (P = 0.000) and a significant increase in mean cell volume (P = 0.015) and reticulocytes (P = 0.000) were observed in grazing cattle, which indicate regenerative anemia. Furthermore, indirect bilirubin was significantly higher in gr...

Production of a new tetravalent vaccine targeting fimbriae and enterotoxin of enterotoxigenic < em > Escherichia coli < /em >
The objective of this study was to prepare a novel tetravalent vaccine to effectively prevent piglet diarrhea caused by E. coli. In order to realize the production of K88ac-K99-ST1-LTB tetravalent inactivated vaccine, the biological characteristics, stability, preservation conditions, and safety of the recombinant strain BL21(DE3) (pXKKSL4) were studied, and the vaccine efficacy and minimum immune dose were measured. The results indicated that the biological characteristics, target protein expression, and immunogenicity of the 1st to 10th generations of the strain were stable. Therefore, the basic seed generation was preli...

Comparison of estimations of urinary bladder volume in different scanning positions using 2D linear dimension formula and 3D bladder circumference tracing in client-owned cats
Can J Vet Res. 2024 Apr;88(2):55-65.ABSTRACTUrinary bladder volume (UBV) can be estimated using point-of-care ultrasound. The purpose of this study was to compare 2 UBV estimation methods, i.e., three-dimensional (3D) bladder circumference tracing and 2-dimensional (2D) linear bladder dimension formula, against actual bladder volumes in awake client-owned cats and identify the best scanning position for UBV estimations. Up to 3 paired sets of orthogonal longitudinal and transverse bladder ultrasound images were acquired by a trained clinician from 21 cats positioned in dorsal, right lateral, and left lateral recumbency. UB...

Prevalence of pathogens in honey bee colonies and association with clinical signs in southwestern Quebec, Canada
Can J Vet Res. 2024 Apr;88(2):45-54.ABSTRACTHoney bees can be affected by a variety of pathogens, which impacts their vital role as pollinators in agriculture. A cross-sectional study was conducted in southwestern Quebec to: i) estimate the prevalence of 11 bee pathogens; ii) assess the agreement between beekeeper suspicion of a disease and laboratory detection of the causative pathogen; and iii) explore the association between observed clinical signs and pathogen detection in a colony. A total of 242 colonies in 31 apiaries owned by 15 beekeepers was sampled in August 2017. The prevalence of Varroa destructor detection wa...

SARS-CoV-2 Mu variant in dogs visiting veterinary clinics during the third pandemic peak in Eastern Colombia
Vet Res Commun. 2024 Apr 10. doi: 10.1007/s11259-024-10374-4. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe global presence of SARS-CoV-2 in household pets is acknowledged, yet documentation remains scarce, leaving many regions unexplored. Thus, our study sought to fill this gap by investigating SARS-CoV-2 presence in dogs visiting veterinary clinics during the third pandemic peak in eastern Colombia. We collected and analyzed 43 oropharyngeal and rectal swabs using real-time PCR assays targeting the Envelope Gene of SARS-CoV-2. Out of these, two dogs tested positive, indicating an infection rate of 4.7%. Further examination through c...

Molecular analysis of < em > Gyrovirus galga1 < /em > variants identified from the sera of dogs and cats in China
In this study, the DNA of GyVg1-related gyroviruses in the sera of six dogs and three cats from Central and Eastern China was identified using PCR. Alignment analysis between the nine obtained and reference GyVg1 strains revealed that the genome identity ranged from 99.20% (DOG03 and DOG04 strains) to 96.17% (DOG01 and DOG06 strains). Six recombination events were predicted in multiple strains, including DOG01, DOG05, DOG06, CAT01, CAT02, and CAT03. The predicted major and minor parents of DOG05 came from Brazil. The DOG06 strain is potentially recombined from strains originating from humans and cats, whereas DOG01 is pote...
