In vitro assessment of the anthelmintic activity of copper oxide and zinc oxide nanoparticles on egg and adult stages of Fasciola hepatica: evidence on oxidative stress biomarkers, and DNA damage
Fasciolosis is of significant economic and public health importance worldwide. The lack of a successful vaccine and emerging resistance in flukes to the drug of choice, triclabendazole, has initiated the searc... (Source: BMC Veterinary Research)

Brachyspira in dogs: risk factors of shedding in central Germany and longitudinal study of an infected kennel
Brachyspira (B.) pilosicoli is a zoonotic pathogen, able to infect different animal species such as pigs, poultry, and rodents, causing intestinal spirochetosis. An association of gastrointestinal clinical signs,... (Source: BMC Veterinary Research)

Citizens can help to map putative transmission sites for snail-borne diseases
Conclusions and recommendationsOur results demonstrate the potential of citizen science to map putative schistosomiasis transmission sites. We therefore argue that this inclusive, powerful and cost-effective approach can be more sustainable than top-down monitoring and intervention campaigns. (Source: PLoS Neglected Tropical Diseases)

Serological diagnosis of soil-transmitted helminth ( < i > Ascaris < /i > , < i > Trichuris < /i > and hookworm) infections: A scoping review
ConclusionsWhile a substantial number of assays are employed in epidemiological research, the current state of serological diagnosis for guiding STH prevention and control programs is limited. Only two assays designed for pigs are used to inform efficient deworming practices in pig populations. Regarding human diagnosis, none of the existing assays has undergone extensive large-scale validation or integration into routine diagnostics for MDA programs. Exploring the One Health Paradigm in Male Breast Cancer
AbstractHow cancer patterns in humans compare to those of other species remains largely unknown and there is an even bigger knowledge gap for rare cancers like male breast cancer. One Health is a convergence of human and animal healthcare that encourages cross-pollination of medical research uniting human and veterinary medicine. Recognising that breast cancer occurs spontaneously in other male species (e.g. primates, canines, felines), and knowing that no laboratory models exist for male breast cancer, which limits our ability to perform functional studies, we explored the feasibility of applying One Health to breast canc...

A porcine kidney-derived clonal cell line with clear genetic annotation is highly susceptible to African swine fever virus
AbstractAfrican Swine Fever virus (ASFV), the causative agent of African swine fever, is a highly lethal hemorrhagic virus affecting domestic pigs and wild boars. The primary target cells for ASFV infection are porcine alveolar macrophages (PAMs), which are difficult to obtain and maintain in vitro, and less subjective to genetic editing. To overcome these issues and facilitate ASFV research, we obtained a subclonal cell line PK1-C5 by subcloning LLC-PK1 cells that support stable ASFV proliferation. This consequential cell line exhibited high ASFV infection levels and similar viral growth characteristics to PAMs, while als...

Use and meaning of the anatomical terms plexus choroideus and tela choroidea in veterinary and human medicine
Folia Morphol (Warsz). 2024 Apr 3. doi: 10.5603/fm.98803. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe anatomical terms plexus chor(i)oideus (CP) and tela chor(i)oidea (TC) are listed without explanations in the official nomenclature handbooks Terminologia Neuroanatomica and Nomina Anatomica Veterinaria. Definitions of CP and TC exhibit discrepancies in medical dictionaries and anatomy handbooks. The aim of our study was to analyse this problem in detail and to discuss a possible unified use of the terms in science and teaching. We conducted a systematic literature review based on the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews ...
