What I Learned From Being Sick
About a year and a half ago I was really sick. When it first started I thought maybe I was fighting the flu or that I wasn't getting enough sleep. But as days went by it got progressively worse. I felt dizzy and faint, I was getting headaches and was so clumsy I started wearing flats all the time for fear I would trip and fall in heels. I realized something must really be wrong and I went to the doctor. It took three visits (to three different people) before I was finally diagnosed with Vertigo. That combined with being severely anemic and having low blood pressure made for a near constant state of dizziness and nausea....

Readers recommend: songs about mood-changing music | Peter Kimpton
A rush of joy? Or moved to tears? Suggest songs with lyrics that refer to other songs or music that can bring about a change in state of mind or emotion “As soon as I hear a sound, it always suggests a mood to me,” said Brian Eno. As an artist who works in many forms, including an endlessly shifting visual project created with designer Nick Robertson, 77 Million Paintings, he is an experimentalist fascinated by constantly shifting nuances and states of mind. But all music changes mood to a greater or lesser extent. Our moods are constantly on the move. As often as philosopher and historian Thomas Carlyle put it, with a...

How This Couple Fought Through Illness To Find A New Destiny
I am a caregiver for my partner who has become housebound and bedridden due to an incurable "invisible" disease. I too live with a serious illness, barely getting through each day, mostly housebound myself. Franky and I met, and a spell was cast; we fell madly deeply infatuated with each other, as young love often does to people. We traveled, went to social events and started dreaming of a life together. Within a couple of months, I was diagnosed with an aggressive strain of HIV. Our fast-run fairytale seemed to be cursed and destined for failure. But we persevered. My family's involvement in my life was scarce due to th...

How I Finally Made Peace With My Anxiety Disorder
I sank into the faded green couch and prepared to tell another stranger about a part of myself I'd been trying to get rid of since I was a child; to describe what it feels like on those rare occasions when my brain tells me to run from everything; when even the most mundane daily tasks -- driving to the store, making plans -- can trigger a fight-or-flight response so intense that my vision blurs, my heart palpitates, my palms perspire, and I am left gasping for breath. Anyone who believes anxiety is purely a mental phenomenon has never had a panic attack. As I prepared to tell this man about the inner workings of my psyc...
