Rapid Rescue Treatment with Diazepam Nasal Spray Leads to Faster Seizure Cluster Termination in Epilepsy: An Exploratory Post Hoc Cohort Analysis
ConclusionEchoing the importance of early use of benzodiazepines in status epilepticus, the findings from this exploratory analysis of patients with refractory epilepsy and frequent seizure clusters identify a potential benefit of early diazepam nasal spray treatment leading to faster seizure resolution within the seizure cluster.Trial Registration Information: ClinicalTrials.gov identifier NCT02721069 (https://clinicaltrials.gov/ct2/show/NCT02721069). Latrodectus envenomation in Ethiopia
We described a black widow envenomation case that produced a significant reaction, including diaphoresis and excruciating pain throughout the left thigh that later spread to the lower leg, lower back, belly, and chest. Because of the patient ’s description of the spider that bit him and his typical clinical state, it was assumed that Latrodectus envenomation was the cause of his symptoms. The patient received 3 days of observation in the ED while receiving opioid analgesic pain management and muscle relaxant treatment with diazepam. The patient's pain and symptoms were satisfactorily managed, and he was sent home. This ...

Combining surface ‐enhanced Raman spectroscopy and paper spray mass spectrometry for the identification and confirmation of psychotropic substances in alcoholic beverages
AbstractCriminal practices in which an individual becomes vulnerable and prone to sexual assault after ingesting drinks spiked with doping substances have become a social concern globally. As forensic protocols require a multi-tiered strategy for chemical evidentiary analysis, the backlog of evidence has become a significant problem in the community. Herein, a fast, sensible, and complementary dual analytical methodology was developed using a single commercial paper substrate for surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) and paper spray mass spectrometry (PS-MS) analysis to identify psychotropic substances added to alcoho...

Antiseizure Effects of < em > Peganum harmala < /em > L. and < em > Lavandula angustifolia < /em >
This study evaluated the effects of these two herbal extracts on pentylenetetrazol- (PTZ-) induced seizures in mice. We prepared hydroalcoholic extracts using P. harmala seeds and the aerial parts of L. angustifolia and then randomly divided 190 mice into 19 groups. Normal saline (10 mg/kg), diazepam (2 mg/kg), P. harmala (2.5, 5, 10, 15, 30, 45, and 60 mg/kg), and L. angustifolia (200, 400, 600, and 800 mg/kg) were intraperitoneally (IP) administrated 30 min before an IP administration of PTZ (90 mg/kg). Animals were observed for behavioral changes for one hour. In addition, the effects of flumazenil and naloxone on the a...

Effects of chronic diazepam exposure on the behaviors and oxidative stress homeostasis in the eyes and brains of female Japanese medaka
In this study, we exposed female Japanese medaka (Oryzias latipes) to environmentally relevant doses of DZP (800 and 8000 ng/L) for 4 weeks, aimed to investigate their behavioral responses and possible links with ocular and brain oxidative stress homeostasis. As a result, DZP exposure could significantly reduce swimming activity (800 ng/L) and anxiety (800 and 8000 ng/L), indicating a sedative effect on medaka. The DZP exposure also significantly increased the social interaction in medaka at 8000 ng/L. Furthermore, exposure to DZP could alter the ocular and brain oxidative stress homeostasis in medaka. The ocular CAT activ...

When the fever will not stop, stop the pills! A case report
CONCLUSION: Antipsychotic agents are commonly employed to manage behavioral changes linked to various disorders. However, their severe side effects necessitate a high degree of vigilance, the cessation of all medications, and the implementation of supportive care measures. A prompt and accurate diagnosis of NMS is crucial to alleviating the severe, prolonged morbidity and potential mortality associated with this syndrome.PMID:38055420 | DOI:10.1590/1516-3180.2022.0401.R1.13032023 (Source: Sao Paulo Medical Journal)
