Researchers Are Working on At-Home Tests for Lyme Disease
If there has been one silver lining to the COVID-19 pandemic, it’s been the rise of rapid self-tests, which provide results at home in minutes. Researchers are hard at work at developing similar tests for other diseases—including Lyme. Lyme disease is transmitted by the black-legged (or deer) tick and infects about 476,000 Americans each year. The faster those people can get treated with the antibiotics doxycycline or amoxicillin, the better their chances of having a short, mild case of the disease. The organizations announced the brand in a 2018 agreement intended to more closely align the health care providers. Segregation doubled the odds of some Black children dying in U.S. cities 100 years ago
From the choice of schools to safety to access to green spaces and healthy food, the neighborhood where a child is raised can play a determining role in their future health . And because structural racism can systematically silo nonwhite people in certain neighborhoods, those local factors shape the health of millions of people of color in the United States. Now, census data link Black children’s neighborhoods and mortality rates in the early 20th century, exposing segregation’s devastating impact on health more than 100 years ago. The study shows segregation drove racial health disparities “not just ...

Study shows metformin lowers the risk of getting long COVID
In a new study published in The Lancet Infectious Diseases, University of Minnesota researchers found that metformin, a drug commonly used to treat diabetes, prevents the development of long COVID. The COVID-19 virus mutated to outsmart key antibody treatments. Better ones are coming
In 2020, as the COVID-19 pandemic raged and other effective drugs were elusive, monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) emerged as a lifesaving treatment. But now, 3 years later, all the approvals for COVID-19–fighting antibodies have been rescinded in the United States, as mutations of the SARS-CoV-2 virus have left the drugs—which target parts of the original virus—ineffective. Researchers around the globe are now trying to revive antibody treatments by redesigning them to take aim at targets that are less prone to mutation. “There are new approaches that present a much more challenging task for the virus to evade,”...

Scientists Have Built a Human ‘ Pangenome ’ to Better Reflect Diversity
For two decades, scientists have been comparing every person’s full set of DNA they study to a template that relies mostly on genetic material from one man affectionately known as “the guy from Buffalo.” But they’ve long known that this template for comparison, or “reference genome,” has serious limits because it doesn’t reflect the spectrum of human diversity. “We need a really good understanding of the variations, the differences between human beings,” said genomics expert Benedict Paten of the University of California, Santa Cruz. “We’re missing out.&rdqu...

What to Know About Damar Hamlin ’ s Heart Event, Commotio Cordis
Nobody watching the Jan. 2, 2023 National Football League game between the Buffalo Bills and Cincinnati Bengals will forget the searing sight of Bills safety Damar Hamlin collapsing to the turf after an otherwise unremarkable tackle late in the game’s first quarter led to his cardiac arrest. Emergency CPR and the use of a defibrillator saved his life, but the now 25-year-old spent a week in intensive care at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center (UCMC), where he was rushed straight from the field, as doctors fought to restore him to health and determine the cause of his near-death experience. He was later trans...
