Predictors of upstream inflammation and oxidative stress pathways during early pregnancy
CONCLUSIONS: In this large pregnancy study, we found that circulating levels of oxylipins were different for participants of lower socioeconomic status or of a systematically marginalized racial and ethnic groups. Given associations differed along biosynthetic pathways, results provide insight into etiologic links between maternal predictors and inflammation and oxidative stress.PMID:38262546 | DOI:10.1016/j.freeradbiomed.2024.01.022 (Source: Free Radical Biology and Medicine)

Lack of Reliable Transportation for Daily Living Among Adults: United States, 2022
NCHS Data Brief. 2024 Jan;(490):1-8.ABSTRACTAccess to transportation may be required for many daily tasks, including going to work, health care visits, and obtaining groceries. Previous research suggests that a lack of transportation, especially among adults who are older, uninsured, and have lower incomes, leads to reduced access to health care, which may then lead to adverse health outcomes (1,2). Using data from the 2022 National Health Interview Survey, this report describes the percentage of adults who lacked reliable transportation for daily living in the past 12 months by selected sociodemographic and geographic cha...

Effect of Medicaid expansion on inflammatory bowel disease and healthcare utilization
Kentucky was among the first to adopt Medicaid expansion, resulting in reducing uninsured rates from 14.3  % to 6.4 %. We hypothesize that Medicaid expansion resulted in increased elective healthcare utilization and reductions in emergency treatments by patients suffering Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD). This study aims to explore the relationship between the ACA and the utilization and outcomes of Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass (RYGB) surgery.METHODS: Using data from the National Inpatient Sample (NIS) Database, this retrospective study compares the pre-ACA period (2007-2009) with the post-ACA period (2017-2019), encompassing patients who had RYGB. Multivariable logistic analysis was done accounting for patient's characteristics, comorbidities, and hospital type.RESULTS: In the combined periods, there were 158 186 RYGB procedures performed, with 30.0% transpiring in pre-ACA and 70.0% in the post-ACA. Post-ACA, the proportion of...

Secure Messaging: Demonstration and Enrollment Patient Portal Program: Patient Portal Use in Vulnerable Populations
Comput Inform Nurs. 2024 Feb 1;42(2):104-108. doi: 10.1097/CIN.0000000000001098.ABSTRACTVulnerable populations face challenges gaining access to quality healthcare, which places them at a high risk for poor health outcomes. Using patient portals and secure messaging can improve patient activation, access to care, patient follow-up adherence, and health outcomes. Developing and testing quality improvement strategies to help reduce disparities is vital to ensure patient portals benefit all, especially vulnerable populations. This quality improvement initiative aimed to increase enrollment in a patient portal, use secure mess...

Patient Characteristics Associated with Embolization vs Hysterectomy for Uterine Fibroids: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis
Black and underinsured women in the U.S. are more likely than their counterparts to develop uterine fibroids (UF) and experience more severe symptoms. Uterine artery embolization (UAE), a uterine-sparing therapeutic procedure, is less invasive than the common alternative, open hysterectomy. To determine whether demographic disparities persist in UF treatment utilization, we reviewed patient characteristics associated with UAE versus hysterectomy for UF among studies of U.S. clinical practices. Breastfeeding Initiation, Duration, and Associated Factors Among People With Hepatitis C Virus Infection
CONCLUSION: Although HCV seropositivity is not a contraindication to breastfeeding regardless of viral load, rates of breastfeeding initiation were lower among people with HCV viremia than among those with an undetectable viral load.CLINICAL TRIAL REGISTRATION: ClinicalTrials.gov, NCT01959321.PMID:38176013 | DOI:10.1097/AOG.0000000000005499 (Source: Obstetrics and Gynecology)
