CEM image quality unaffected by iron particles from tracers
Low-dose iron oxide tracers impact the quality of breast MR images, but not that of contrast-enhanced mammography (CEM), a study published February 5 in Surgical Oncology found. Researchers led by Elisabeth van Haaren from the Zuyderland Medical Centre in Sittard-Geleen, the Netherlands, found that even after a low-dose injection (1 ml) of superparamagnetic iron oxide (SPIO) tracer, iron remnants stay behind in the breast tissue and disturb all MR images. However, they also observed no such effect on CEM images. “CEM could be valuable alternative if additional imaging is needed in the follow-up of breast cancer,” van...

Editorial criticizes breast screening guidelines, ACR responds
An editorial criticizing the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) breast cancer screening guidelines has drawn the ire of the American College of Radiology (ACR).  The editorial, published February 5 in the Annals of Internal Medicine, stated that the updated USPSTF guidelines issued in 2023 could create more confusion among women considering undergoing breast cancer screening and make way for more harm tied to screening.  “The USPSTF risks abandoning its role in setting the standard for using evidence and sound judgment to make medical decisions,” wrote Russell Harris, MD, a former USPSTF member, in his ed...

What is the Differential Diagnosis of a Suprarenal Mass?
Discussion Suprarenal masses (SRM) are not that common (incidence of 1.9/1000 in neonates), but are more commonly diagnosed prenatally because of prenatal ultrasound. Masses can be difficult to accurately diagnose even after birth because their features overlap. Radiographically they can be variable in size, cystic/solid or mixed and with or without calcifications. Common signs and symptoms of SRM include anemia, jaundice, scrotal hematoma and abdominal mass. Signs of asphyxia may also occur. Often patients whose diagnosis is not clear are monitored closely for a few weeks to see how the lesion changes with time. This is e...

FDA clears Philips ’ new ultrasound transducer
Philips HealthCare parent Royal Philips has received U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) clearance for its new Mini TEE ultrasound transducer. X11- 4t Mini 3D TEE is intended for cardiovascular ultrasound imaging and was designed to be smaller to meet unmet needs in pediatric patients (as small as 5 kg), adults at risk of complications, and in complex intensive-case-unit (ICU) cases, in which the probe for the company’s 3D TEE transducer was too large, Philips said.A clinician using the Mini TEE 3D transducer on a pediatric patient.Image courtesy of Royal Philips The Mini Live 3D TEE transducer operates with the sa...

Deep learning could improve lung ultrasound interpretation
Deep learning could improve real-time lung ultrasound interpretation, according to a study published January 29 in Ultrasonics. Researchers led by Lewis Howell, PhD, from the University of Leeds in the U.K. found that a deep learning model trained on lung ultrasound allowed for segmentation and characterization of artifacts on images when tested on a phantom model. “Machine learning and deep learning present an exciting opportunity to assist in the interpretation of lung ultrasound and other pathologies imaged using ultrasound,” Howell and colleagues wrote. Lung ultrasound in recent years has been highlighted in res...

Thyroid ultrasound database may spur better diagnostic models
A thyroid ultrasound imaging database could spur the development of more effective diagnostic and treatment models for related diseases, according to research published January 23 in Ultrasound in Medicine & Biology. A team led by Xiang Li from Northeastern University in Shenyang highlighted that its imaging database can make way for developing more accurate computer-aided detection (CAD) systems to analyze thyroid nodule-related lesions found on ultrasound. It also introduced a marker mask inpainting (MMI) method to erase artificial markers and improve image quality. “This database collects a wide variety of nodule im...
