ATSU SOMA v CUSOM v ATSU Kirksville
Background info: I have HPSP scholarship so the cost of school and the cost of living is not a factor. Entering med school I am leaning towards residency in orthopedics. My strengths are clinical; my weakness is pure sciences. ATSU SOMA: Pros: -Early clinical cycle, would like to work in a CHC 1 day a week as a break from academics -location of the school and my top 3 CHC choices. -small group learning 2nd year at CHC Cons: -No established ultrasound program -Minimal international... Butterfly IQ+ Ultrasound
So I received an email from Butterfly stating that they had a new and improved model of their ultrasound device. Their website though doesn't actually have any details about how image quality compares to the first generation device. Anyone know anything about the IQ+ or have links to any reviews and comparisons to the original IQ? (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Arterial line - no flash
CA3 here - Have had a few instances now where I’ve done arterial lines either by palpation or ultrasound where i don’t have any flash. The times when I use ultrasound i clearly see I’m in the artery, there’s no flash, but i continue to follow my needle tip into the vessel and then thread the wire, slip in the catheter, and I have a great arterial waveform on the monitor. No flash or very minimal flash. Pressure is totally normal and they’re usually not really on pressors. Thoughts on why... Arterial line - no flash (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Reimbursement in endocrine
I've been looking through some of the threads on this forum re: endocrine average annual base salary which can range between 200-250k for typical outpatient only practices (4-5 days/week). I had a few additional questions regarding reimbursement in this field 1) For endos comfortable with incorporating official neck ultrasounds and thyroid biopsies into their actual practices, how much more on average can this add to annual salary? (realizing that there are RVU limitations and not all... Reimbursement in endocrine (Source: Student Doctor Network)

sedation/ brachy logistics
We are looking into our work flow/policies on cervix brachy and other procedures and I wanted to get some input. For first cervix brachy I prefer full OR/full sedation and often suture in a Smitt sleeve and use ultrasound guidance for. For subsequent implants (assuming tandem/ovoid or tandem/cylinder), what type of sedation are you all using? Do you have a CRNA there to help administer sedation? Do you have a procedure room where you do brachy? For spaceOAR similar question - do you do... sedation/ brachy logistics (Source: Student Doctor Network)

M4 here -- would really appreciate any guidance on my dilemma between choosing EM vs Rads
DO student here. 243 Step 1. Taking CK on October 2nd but likely to score 230-240 realistically. No red flags on my app, but my app has so far been EM-oriented as I have a SLOE and one LOR from an Ultrasound rotation ready. The thing is, lately I have been reflecting on my EM rotation and experience so far and worry about career longevity but also frankly how much of my attraction to working up "undifferentiated patients" in the ED may have been misplaced. To put another way, almost every... M4 here -- would really appreciate any guidance on my dilemma between choosing EM vs Rads (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Pointers for central lines
So recently I have been having a hard time placing central lines (IJ with ultrasound) on non-intubated/paralyzed patients. Obviously most of these patient are ill/hypotensive but still alert enough to thrash around while I'm trying to place the line, making it much more difficult. Given their low blood pressure and crappy vitals, nurses are understandably uncomfortable giving sedating medication. Any thoughts or tips. (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Butterfly IQ Ultrasound for MSK and Neuromuscular Applications
Does anyone have experience with the Butterfly IQ US? Handheld portable ultrasound machine | Butterfly iQ Is the image quality good enough to make it diagnostically useful? I know it's not a Sonosite or GE, but it would be very useful to have it for learning/practice. But if I can't really define anatomy (nerves, joints, tendons), then it's not really worth it, IMO. What are people's thoughts? (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Using Butterfly IQ for injections
Has anyone tried using the Butterly IQ ultrasound probe to perform nerve blocks or joint injections? I have done shoulder and hip joint injections using this probe, and while the anatomy showed up reasonably well, the needle (a regular BBraun 22g spinal needle) did not. I was able to get the injections done, but I am not sure how useful this device is for anything besides scanning. Anyone else have any thoughts on this probe for regional blocks and/or interventional procedures? (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Opinions on ultrasound machines- Sonosite xporte vs ge venue
We're looking to buy another ultrasound machine for the ICU. Anyone with experience to compare the x-porte and the venue? No need to support TEE. Planning to get linear and phased array probes. Intended use would be vascular access and focused echo exams. (Source: Student Doctor Network)

BRCA1/2 mutation positive, doesnt want surgery
Have you guys ever had a patient in their 40s, rich family history of breast and ovarian cancer, tested positive for the mutation, but does not want any prophylactic surgery. How would you proceed with surveillance? Obviously routine mammography is needed. Would this be an indication for routine pelvic ultrasound (q 1 year)? I read somewhere that sometimes CA 125 is checked as well? (Though i thought tumor markers were more relevant in post diagnosis and prognostic situations) (Source: Student Doctor Network)

How can you know if you like EM because you like the specialty or because you just get to do a lot as a med student?
I posted this question several months ago, but wanted to get some more responses from fellow med students who are interested or will be pursuing emergency medicine. In a nutshell: I've been ruminating if my interest in the specialty has been a function of the fact that I have been able to do a lot during my shifts (have done 20 shifts), such as H&Ps, present to attendings, updating patients on results, and helping with ultrasound or some minor procedure -- basically being useful and involved... Ultrasound resources
Hello guys, I just started by radiology electives this month and will be beginning my R1 soon. What I noticed just now is how difficult of a modality ultrasound actually is. Especially on board style questions where you don't have much information given, ex: the tech sheet. I noticed that alot of senior residents struggle on ultrasound as well. We are expected to start ultrasound reads before CT abdomen and pelvis. So I was wondering what are your guys best resources for resident level books...
