Brain functional connectivity in Tourette syndrome
(Elsevier) Tourette syndrome, a neurodevelopmental disorder, causes motor and phonic " tics, " or uncontrollable repeated behaviors and vocalizations. People affected by Tourette syndrome can often suppress these tics for some time before the urges become overwhelming, and researchers have long wondered at the neural underpinnings of the suppression effort. In a new study, researchers at Yale School of Medicine have assessed the impact of tic suppression on functional connectivity between brain regions. (Source: EurekAlert! - Medicine and Health)

New blueprint of brain connections reveals extensive reach of central regulator
(University of California - San Diego) UC San Diego researchers have generated a new map of connectivity from a part of the brain called the basal ganglia, a hub for regulating motor and behavior functions. The breadth of connections revealed could potentially open avenues for intervention of Parkinson's disease and other disorders such as Tourette's syndrome, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and obsessive-compulsive disorder. How the brain learns that earmuffs are not valuable at the beach
(University of Tsukuba) A collaboration between the University of Tsukuba and the NEI in the US has discovered that fast-spiking neurons in the basal ganglia allow monkeys to associate different values with the same objects based on the surrounding environment. Blocking input from these cells inhibited learning of new scene-based values, but did not erase already learned associations. This could help understand clinical conditions such as Tourette syndrome, which is characterized by reduced input from these cells. (Source: EurekAlert! - Social and Behavioral Science)
