Ludwig's angina and acute myocardial infarction: A case report
Clin Case Rep. 2023 Aug 24;11(9):e7832. doi: 10.1002/ccr3.7832. eCollection 2023 Sep.ABSTRACTLudwig's angina was first described in 1839 by German physician, Wilhelm Frederick Von Ludwig as a rapidly and fatal progressive gangrenous cellulitis and edema of the soft tissues of the neck and floor of the mouth with rapid spread to other places like anterior mediastinum. However, Type 2 acute myocardial infarction (MI) due to Ludwig's angina has not been documented. A 62-year-old male presented to the emergency department with visible anterior neck swelling for 1 week, which was preceded by a tooth arch 1 week prior, the patie...

Comprehensive adsorption and spectroscopic studies on the interaction of magnetic biochar from black wattle sawdust with beta-blocker metoprolol
This study shows the preparation of magnetic biochars (MB) from waste black wattle sawdust, utilizing ZnCl2 and NiCl2 (proportions: 1:0.5:0.5 = MB-0.5 and 1:1:1 = MB-1) as activating and magnetic agents. Synthesized via microwave-assisted-pyrolysis, MB boasts a high surface area (up to 765 m2.g-1) and functional groups, enhancing metoprolol medicine adsorption. Nonlinear kinetic and isothermal models were tested; the Avrami fractional-order kinetic model and Liu's isothermal model provided the best fits for experimental data. Thermodynamics and spectroscopic studies revealed spontaneous and exothermic adsorption processes,...

Pharmaceuticals, pesticides, and ultraviolet filters in wastewater discharges to San Francisco Bay as drivers of ecotoxicity
In this study, concentrations of 5 representative pharmaceuticals, 11 pesticides or pesticide degradation products, and 5 ultraviolet filters were measured in 24 h composite samples of six wastewater discharges representing ∼70% of the total wastewater discharged to San Francisco Bay during the summer and fall of 2021. No significant difference was observed between concentrations measured on weekdays vs. weekends. A hydrodynamic model of San Francisco Bay was used to estimate annual average dilution factors associated with different subembayments. With and without considering dilution effects, Risk Quotients were calcula...

An Atypical Short RP Tachycardia – What is the Mechanism?
A 73 year-old man with recurrent, symptomatic supraventricular tachycardia (SVT) had undergone right-sided slow pathway (SP) ablation for a reported diagnosis of atrioventricular nodal reentrant tachycardia (AVNRT) at another institution. Because of persistent symptoms despite metoprolol therapy, he underwent repeat electrophysiologic study. (Source: Heart Rhythm)

Effect of pharmacological heart failure drugs and gene therapy on Danon's cardiomyopathy
Biochem Pharmacol. 2023 Aug 10:115735. doi: 10.1016/j.bcp.2023.115735. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTDanon disease is an X-linked genetic disease resulting from LAMP2 mutations leading to defective lysosomal function. Heart failure is the main causes of morbidity and mortality. Mice with an LAMP2-exon-6-deletion (L2Δ6), develop cardiac hypertrophy followed by dilated cardiomyopathy, in association with accumulation of autophagosomes, fibrosis and oxidative stress. We investigated the effect of drugs used to treat heart failure and of LAMP2 gene therapy on the phenotype, molecular markers and ROS in LAMP2 cardiomyopathy. L...

Pharmacological interventions for asymptomatic carotid stenosis
CONCLUSIONS: Although there is no high-certainty evidence to support pharmacological intervention, this does not mean that pharmacological treatments are ineffective in preventing ischaemic cerebral events, morbidity, and mortality. High-quality RCTs are needed to better inform the best medical treatment that may reduce the burden of carotid stenosis. In the interim, clinicians will have to use other sources of information.PMID:37565307 | DOI:10.1002/14651858.CD013573.pub2 (Source: Atherosclerosis)
