Repurposing metformin to manage idiopathic or long COVID Tinnitus: self-report adopting a pathophysiological and pharmacological approach
AbstractChronic tinnitus is a common neurological disorder that affects millions of patients globally with no available successful pharmacotherapy. It can be extremely bothersome to some patients to the extent that it occasionally qualifies as a disability that can hinder them from leading a normal life. In this short communication, the author discusses how he suffered from idiopathic tinnitus and how he managed to adopt a combined pathophysiological and pharmacological approach to the reason for the first time in the medical literature that low-dose metformin might be safely and effectively repurposed to manage at least a...

Disabling tinnitus and third nerve palsy following pontine hemorrhage: Application of ICF framework
This report describes a 31-year-old male with hypertension who developed a pontine hemorrhage. The neurological deficits included left-third nerve palsy, right-sided weakness, and disabling tinnitus. Tinnitus is linked to central auditory pathway disruption. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed the hemorrhagic lesion and additional micro-hemorrhages. The International Classification of Functioning, Disability, and Health (ICF) enhances rehabilitation by characterizing multifaceted stroke disability. The ICF profile revealed impairments in body structures/functions, limitations in activities/participation, and positive/negat...

Audiometric Outcomes of Auditory Brainstem Implantation during Vestibular Schwannoma Resection in NF2 Patients
Conclusion Nine of 11 patients derived benefits from ABI placement. These findings demonstrate that ABI placement during concurrent VS resection can provide a significant hearing benefit for NF2 patients. The effect of local dexamethasone on stapedotomy surgery outcomes in patients with otosclerosis
CONCLUSION: Since local dexamethasone had a positive effect on the results of stapedotomy surgery, it can be used instead of systemic corticosteroids to reduce the side effects and increasing surgery's success rate.SIGNIFICANCE: If local dexamethasone had a positive influence on the results of stapedotomy surgery, it can be used instead of systemic corticosteroids to reduce the side effects and increasing surgery's success rate.PMID:38279924 | DOI:10.1080/00016489.2024.2304062 (Source: Acta Oto-Laryngologica)

Auditory processing control by the medial prefrontal cortex: A review of the rodent functional organisation
Hear Res. 2024 Jan 20;443:108954. doi: 10.1016/j.heares.2024.108954. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAfferent inputs from the cochlea transmit auditory information to the central nervous system, where information is processed and passed up the hierarchy, ending in the auditory cortex. Through these brain pathways, spectral and temporal features of sounds are processed and sent to the cortex for perception. There are also many mechanisms in place for modulation of these inputs, with a major source of modulation being based in the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC). Neurons of the rodent mPFC receive input from the auditory corte...
