FDA grants de novo clearance to AI Biomed, FluoOptics parathyroid tissue detection devices
The FDA today granted de novo clearance to parathyroid tissue detection devices from both Fluoptics and AI Biomed. The systems are intended to provide the real-time location of parathyroid tissue during surgical procedures including thyroidectomy and parathyroidectomy, the federal watchdog said. FluOptics won approval for its Fluobeam 800 clinic imaging device which can be used as a companion to assist in locating parathyroid tissue during surgery, the FDA said. Could a New Imaging Device Curb Thyroid Cancer?
A new development out of Taiwan could improve thyroid cancer screening after doctors unveiled a new diagnostic imaging tool last month. The AmCAD-UT Detection technology developed by AmCad BioMed Corp. is being hailed as the world’s first ultrasound CAD for thyroid cancer detection. For years, doctors have relied on traditional ultrasound imaging devices that produce black-and-white images to help doctors get a view of the thyroid nodules for abnormalities. All thyroid cancers are not 'created equal'-- avoiding unnecessary or 'excessive' treatment

Gilbert Welch (The Dartmouth Institute) and Gerard Doherty (Brigham and Women's Hospital), analyze the steep increase in the number of people being diagnosed with thyroid cancer. Their analysis suggests that it points to not only widespread overdiagnosis, but also to overtreatment -- with the number of thyroidectomys on the rise when the choice between thyroidectomy and the less invasive lobectomy has little effect on the risk of death from thyroid cancer.
