Early neonatal outcomes in infants of mothers with organ transplantation under immunosuppressive treatment
CONCLUSION: Apart from an increased risk of prematurity, low birth weight, and cesarean delivery, no effects were observed in these infants during the early period. However, long-term follow-up is necessary to monitor for any potential morbidities.PMID:38523375 | DOI:10.24953/turkjped.2023.748 (Source: The Turkish Journal of Pediatrics)

Management of pediatric hemolytic uremic syndrome
Turk J Pediatr. 2024;66(1):1-16. doi: 10.24953/turkjped.2023.596.ABSTRACTClassical clinical triad of hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS) is microangiopathic hemolytic anemia, thrombocytopenia, and acute kidney injury associated with endothelial cell injury. Several situations, including infections, medications, malignancies, and transplantation can trigger endothelial damage. On the HUS spectrum, atypical hemolytic uremic syndrome (aHUS) deserves special attention in pediatric patients, as it can cause endstage kidney disease and mortality. A dysfunction in the alternative complement pathway, either acquired or genetic, has be...

Immune attack on megakaryocytes in immune thrombocytopenia
Res Pract Thromb Haemost. 2024 Mar 14;8(1):102345. doi: 10.1016/j.rpth.2024.102345. eCollection 2024 Jan.ABSTRACTA State of the Art lecture titled "Immune Attack on Megakaryocytes in ITP: The Role of Megakaryocyte Impairment" was presented at the International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis Congress in 2023. Immune thrombocytopenia (ITP) is an acquired autoimmune disorder caused by autoantibodies against platelet surface glycoproteins that provoke increased clearance of circulating platelets, leading to reduced platelet number. However, there is also evidence of a direct effect of antiplatelet autoantibodies on bone...

Evaluation of childhood malignancies presenting with musculoskeletal manifestations from two different divisions: a multicenter study
CONCLUSIONS: Malignancies may present with only MSK system complaints in childhood. Therefore, malignancies should be included in the differential diagnosis of patients presenting with MSK complaints.PMID:38523382 | DOI:10.24953/turkjped.2023.446 (Source: The Turkish Journal of Pediatrics)

Case report: unprecedented case of infantile cerebral infarction following COVID-19 and favorable outcome
We present a case of a previously healthy 7-month-old infant who developed cerebral infarction and coagulation dysfunction three days after COVID-19 onset. Clinically, the infant had weakness in the left limbs and pinpoint bleeding spots. A cranial magnetic resonance imaging showed ischemic strokes in the right basal ganglia and thalamus. Laboratory tests indicated thrombocytopenia and coagulation dysfunction. Inflammatory cytokines like interleukin-10 were elevated, with increased CD3+, CD4+, and CD8+ T lymphocytes but decreased CD3- CD16+ CD56+ natural killer cells. Treatment included mannitol, dexamethasone, oral aspiri...

Does Platelet Transfusion Increase the Risk for Healthcare Associated Infection in Cardiac Surgical Patients?
Although platelets are commonly transfused in cardiac surgery for thrombocytopenia and to treat post cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) coagulopathy, platelet transfusion is also plagued by significant challenges including frequent product shortages, inventory management problems, and the potential for bacterial contamination, which can cause sepsis. Transfusion-related bacterial infection occurs most commonly with platelet transfusion because platelets are typically stored at room temperature, which facilitates bacterial growth. Eltrombopag treatment in thrombocytopenia following hematopoietic stem cell transplantation: A multicenter real-world experience
CONCLUSION: As a result of the present study, Eltrombopag treatment was found to be effective and safe in thrombocytopenia that develops following hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. It was concluded that its use may be more effective in patients with sufficient bone marrow megakaryocytes before the treatment and an initial dose of 50 mg/day may be appropriate in terms of cost, effectiveness, and toxicity. Large-scale randomized and controlled prospective studies are needed to determine the roles of Eltrombopag treatment in patients with post-transplant PIT and SFPR.PMID:38520796 | DOI:10.1016/j.leukres.2024.107484 (S...

The use of belimumab on patients with both systemic lupus erythematosus and immune thrombocytopenia: A retrospective cohort study
CONCLUSION: Belimumab shows promising clinical outcomes in the treatment on patients with both SLE and ITP. Further studies are needed to validate these findings in larger patient populations and compare the efficacy of belimumab with other treatments for SLE complicated with ITP. Long-term response rates and adverse events associated with belimumab treatment also warrant further investigation.PMID:38518059 | DOI:10.1177/09612033241241576 (Source: Lupus)
