GPs 'failing to prescribe tamoxifen to prevent breast cancer'
Conclusion This large survey shows around half of GPs surveyed were unaware of the benefits of tamoxifen: namely, that the drug can reduce the risk of breast cancer in women with a family history of the condition. Only around a quarter of GPs surveyed were aware of the current UK guidelines. Researchers found GPs were more likely to feel comfortable carrying on a prescription initiated by hospital doctors, rather than being the one to take the decision to prescribe. This is perhaps unsurprising given that the drug is still not licensed for the primary prevention of cancer. NICE currently recommends prescribers need to ta...

Ignorant GPs deny patients drugs that ward off cancer

Black Women Face Devastating Losses If Obamacare Is Repealed
Bianca Adams worked part-time jobs as a spa professional, sometimes juggling two or three at a time, for years. But none of them offered her insurance, which meant that the 47-year-old with diabetes often went to the emergency room for care. “I was one of those people that had to go to the emergency when my blood sugar got too high and I needed fluids,” Adams told The Huffington Post. “There was really no one managing my health at that point.” When her Medicaid coverage through the Affordable Care Act began in 2014, Adams, who has been disabled with severe knee problems for 25 years, under...

How Soy Can Both Prevent Breast Cancer And Fuel Its Spread
To eat soy or not: That’s the question many U.S. women have been asking. Tofu, miso paste and other soybean-based foods are high-quality sources of protein that are low in calories and saturated fat. And studies have shown that they can help prevent cancer. Yet many doctors recommend that women who have, or are at risk of developing, a common form of breast cancer called estrogen-receptor-positive breast cancer avoid eating soybean-based foods because they contain compounds called isoflavones. Some studies suggest that isoflavones can mimic the hormone estrogen and encourage tumor growth. Now, in an animal study, res...

Many Breast Cancer Survivors Don't Get Life-Extending Therapy
THURSDAY, Feb. 2, 2017 -- Hormonal therapies such as tamoxifen, or a class of drugs called aromatase inhibitors, can reduce the likelihood that women diagnosed with certain breast cancers will experience a recurrence of their disease. However, a... (Source: Drugs.com - Daily MedNews)

New insights into why breast cancer drugs fail for some women
Conclusion This laboratory study aimed to investigate the mechanism behind how some oestrogen receptor-positive breast cancer tumours develop resistance to the hormone drugs tamoxifen and aromatase inhibitors. This resistance effectively makes these drugs powerless, causing the cancer to return. The researchers seemed to find at least part of the answer as to why resistance to aromatase inhibitors can develop. In some cases, they found treatment triggered the amplification of the CYP19A1 gene, which increased the production of aromatase, essentially allowing the cells to keep making their own oestrogen. But this doesn't...
