Associations between Antenatal Care Visit Attendance and Infant Mortality and Growth
This study examines the association between antenatal care (ANC) attendance and infant mortality and growth outcomes. The study used data from the Nouveux-nés et Azithromycine: une Innovation dans le Traitement des Enfants (NAITRE) trial conducted in Burkina Faso. This analysis included 21,795 neonates aged 8 to 27 days who were enrolled in the trial and had ANC data available. Infants were followed until 6 months of age. The analysis adjusted for potential confounders including infant's sex, maternal age, education, urbanicity, geographic region, season (dry versus rainy), pregnancy type (singleton versus multiple), numb...

An outbreak of hepatitis E virus genotype 4d caused by consuming undercooked pig liver in a nursing home in Zhejiang Province, China
Int J Food Microbiol. 2024 Mar 25;417:110682. doi: 10.1016/j.ijfoodmicro.2024.110682. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTHepatitis E infection is typically caused by contaminated water or food. In July and August 2022, an outbreak of hepatitis E was reported in a nursing home in Zhejiang Province, China. Local authorities and workers took immediate actions to confirm the outbreak, investigated the sources of infection and routes of transmission, took measures to terminate the outbreak, and summarized the lessons learned. An epidemiological investigation was conducted on all individuals in the nursing home, including demographic...

Elevated periodic limb movement index is associated with hypoxemia in children with early onset scoliosis
CONCLUSION: The study suggests that children with early onset scoliosis have higher frequency of periodic limb movements during sleep, and these may be correlated with increased arousal and with hypoxemia.PMID:38625422 | DOI:10.1007/s11325-024-03029-w (Source: Sleep and Breathing)

Enhancing cutaneous wound healing: A study on the beneficial effects of nano-gelatin scaffold in rat models
This study focuses on assessing the potential benefits of implementing a nano-gelatin scaffold for wound healing. Using a rat skin defect model, full-thickness incisional wounds were created on each side of the thoracic-lumbar regions after anesthesia. The wounds were left un-sutured, with one side covered by a gelatin nano-fibrous membrane and the other left uncovered. Wound size changes were measured on days 1, 4, 7, and 14, and on day 14, rats were sacrificed for tissue sample excision, examined with hematoxylin and eosin, and Masson's trichrome stain. Statistical comparisons were performed. The gelatin nanofibers exhib...

The effects of re-irradiation on the chemical and morphological properties of permanent teeth
This study aimed to assess the in vitro effects of re-irradiation on enamel and dentin properties, simulating head and neck cancer radiotherapy retreatment. Forty-five human permanent molars were classified into five groups: non-irradiated; irradiated 60 Gy, and re-irradiated with doses of 30, 40, and 50 Gy. Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (EDS) were employed for analysis. Raman spectroscopy assessed intensity, spectral area, and specific peaks comparatively. Statistical analysis involved Kolmogorov-Smirnov and One-Way ANOVA tests, with Tukey's post-test (sig...

Assessing the benefits of an online prematriculation anatomy workshop on knowledge acquisition and anatomy competency in a Doctor of Physical Therapy program
Adv Physiol Educ. 2024 Jun 1;48(2):347-355. doi: 10.1152/advan.00053.2023.ABSTRACTPreparing students for the transition to graduate-level education with greater learning demands in a condensed time frame is a challenging process for health professions educators and incoming students. Prematriculation programs offer a solution for exposing students to the foundational sciences in preparation for the academic rigor of a doctoral program. This retrospective study assessed whether incoming students enrolled across 3 yr of a 2-day online anatomy workshop, offered in July and August before the start of their first semester resul...

Foot-and-mouth disease seroprevalence is higher in young female crossbred sheep and goats compared to their counterparts in the border area between Pakistan and Afghanistan
CONCLUSIONS: This study showed that FMD is highly prevalent in sheep and goats in the border areas of Pakistan and Afghanistan. Therefore, outbreak investigation teams should be arranged at the border level to develop FMD risk-based surveillance and control plans for small ruminants in order to mitigate infection risks.PMID:38626798 | DOI:10.2460/ajvr.23.12.0279 (Source: American Journal of Veterinary Research)

Poststroke Communication Ability Predicts Patient-Informant Discrepancies in Reported Activities and Participation
DISCUSSION: These findings highlight the importance of measuring participation by PROM. The PWA's experience of participation is not related to their level of language impairment and is predictably different from their care partners' perspective. As others have also reported, "mild" aphasia is not so mild to the PWA. Similarly, "severe" may not be so severe to the PWA. Further research is needed to connect these findings with counseling and caregiver education. Research on response processes (e.g., response shift) is also warranted.PMID:38625105 | DOI:10.1044/2024_AJSLP-23-00322 (Source: American Journal of Speech-Language Pathology)

Changes in retinal nerve fiber layer thickness may be the cause of post-COVID-19 headaches
CONCLUSION: In this study, a correlation between headache and changes in RNLF after COVID-19 infection was found. It may have wider ramifications to look into the COVID-19-associated headache phenotype of people with a history of migraines, contributing to a more comprehensive understanding of migraine pathogenesis. This relationship can provide further insight into this infection.PMID:38625389 | DOI:10.1080/01616412.2024.2340875 (Source: Neurological Research)
