Answer for benefit-risk question for use of statins as a risk factor for developing diabetes reflects positivity- benefit still outweighs risk: dose, varying time and type of statin matters.

Any reason not to be on a statin?
Like I get when it’s indicated and understand the side effects. But is there any reason not to just take one to take one? (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Cardiointerventional Radiology
Just out of curiosity, why didn't Coronary artery disease catheterization/stenting end up being treated in a similar fashion to what happened with the arteries that feed the brain? In the neuro realm, even though Neurologists are still the main person diagnosing the patient and making long term management decisions about antithrombotic therapy and statins, they are usually not the ones performing the procedures (which go to surgeons and radiologists). Do you think that there is... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Fears of disliking certain aspects of medicine?
Does anyone else have this fear of only treating the symptoms but not the disease? If I have to spend the rest of my life prescribing Metformin for high blood sugar or statins for high cholesterol without attempting to fix the root cause, I’d rip my hair out. I wouldn’t take such a job even if it paid me 500k because I’d be treating symptoms rather than disease. In fact, I’d be much more satisfied with a 150k job where I could directly help a patient cut out processed sugar and excess... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

40M low ASCVD, will statin reduce risk of plaque over time?
Hi colleagues. I'm a new PCP. I have 40M with ASCVD risk < 2% who has LDL 150. His previous doctor put him in atorvastatin 10. The argument is that keeping the LDL down on a young guy will reduce the risk of plaque build up. Pt wants to know why I am waiting till he turns 60 for the ASCVD risk score to go up before starting statin. How do I explain the rationale to the patient? Are there any references or guidelines you can direct me too? Thanks for your help. (Source: Student Doctor Network)
