Investigation of the growth of Listeria in plant-based beverages
The objective of the present study was to evaluate whether the content of sugar, protein, fat, or fibre in commercially available and specially formulated plant-based beverages (oat, soya and pea) influences the growth rates of Listeria. Beverages were inoculated with a strain cocktail of Listeria (approximately 1 × 103 CFU/mL), and the data demonstrated that Listeria could proliferate in all tested beverages. Moreover, varying concentrations of naturally occurring or added sugar (0-3.3%), protein (3.3-5%), fat (1.1-3.5%) and added fibre (0-1.5%) did not have a statistically significant (p > 0.05) impact on the growth ...

Peripheral arterial disease in black African diabetics: epidemioclinical, ultrasonographic profile and determining factors
CONCLUSION: In our series, PAD was often discovered at an advanced stage, with a non-negligible prevalence. The determining factors found were hypertension and obesity. Screening and control of major cardiovascular risk factors is a priority in the management of this disease.PMID:38636245 | DOI:10.1016/j.ancard.2024.101736 (Source: Annales de Cardiologie et d'Angeiologie)

Optimizing fluconazole-embedded transfersomal gel for enhanced antifungal activity and compatibility studies
Fungal infections are of major concern all over the globe, and fluconazole is the most prevalently used drug to treat it. The goal of this research work was to formulate a fluconazole-embedded transfersomal gel for the treatment of fungal infections. A compatibility study between fluconazole and soya lecithin was performed by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Transfersomes were formulated by a thin-film hydration technique using soya lecithin and Span 80. A central composite design was adopted to prepare different formulations. Soya lecithin and Span 80 were chosen as independent variables, and the effect of these v...

Reorienting research investments toward under ‐researched crops for sustainable food systems
AbstractThe dominance of a few staple crops (maize, rice, and wheat) in most agricultural systems hampers the application of interventions to improve food security and nutrition. Research and development attention has focused on improving the production and utilization of these crops, leaving other crops under-researched and underutilized. Subsequently, there have been high malnutrition rates due to poor diet diversity, yet there are “opportunity crops” that remain under researched. The opportunity crops can unlock solutions to food insecurity, malnutrition, a lack of biodiversity, and indeed poor climate adaptation. T...

Bioremediation of trichloroethylene-contaminated groundwater using green carbon-releasing substrate with pH control capability
Environ Pollut. 2024 Mar 15:123768. doi: 10.1016/j.envpol.2024.123768. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTIn this research, a sustainable substrate, termed green and long-lasting substrate (GLS), featuring a blend of emulsified substrate (ES) and modified rice husk ash (m-RHA) was devised. The primary objective was to facilitate the bioremediation of groundwater contaminated with trichloroethylene (TCE) using innovative GLS for slow carbon release and pH control. The GLS was concocted by homogenizing a mixture of soybean oil, surfactants (Simple Green™ and soya lecithin), and m-RHA, ensuring a gradual release of carbon source...

Toxicological evaluation of a fish oil concentrate containing Very Long Chain Fatty Acids
Food Chem Toxicol. 2024 Feb 20:114518. doi: 10.1016/j.fct.2024.114518. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTVery long chain fatty acids (VLCFA) have a chain length ≥24 carbons. Fish contain low levels of these fatty acids. A commercial oil called EPAX® Evolve 05 with an up-concentration of VLCFAs of approximately 10 times, has been developed as a dietary supplement by Epax Norway AS. A series of toxicological studies were performed using mice and rats to determine the safety and toxicity of repeat dosing with a gavage administered VLCFA formulation. The results suggest transient lipid accumulation in kidneys and liver. Lipid a...

Polyphenol Contents, Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) and Antibacterial Activity of Methanol Extract and Fractions of < em > Sonneratia Caseolaris < /em > Fruits from Ben Tre Province in Vietnam
J Microbiol Biotechnol. 2024 Jan 28;34(1):94-102. doi: 10.4014/jmb.2304.04019. Epub 2023 Sep 30.ABSTRACTPlants contain a large number of phytochemical components, many of which are known as bioactive compounds and responsible for the expression of various pharmacological activities. The extract of Sonneratia caseolaris fruit collected in Vietnam was investigated for its total phenolic and total flavonoid contents using methanol solvent and different fractions of S. caseolaris fruits (hexane, ethyl acetate, n-butanol, and aqueous). GC-MS analysis was conducted to identify the bioactive chemical constituents occurring in the...

Prevalence of major food allergens in skincare products for atopic dermatitis
CONCLUSIONS: Our analysis revealed that major food allergens are prevalent in skincare products for eczema. Applying skincare products containing food derivatives on affected and inflamed skin can promote percutaneous sensitisation. Therefore, clinicians and patients with atopic dermatitis must be careful of products used for treating eczema that may contain derivatives of a major food allergen.PMID:38282883 | PMC:PMC10809837 | DOI:10.5114/ada.2023.133819 (Source: Advances in Dermatology and Allergology)
