Pharmacological labour pain interventions: South African midwives' perspective
BMC Nurs. 2024 Mar 14;23(1):176. doi: 10.1186/s12912-024-01844-w.ABSTRACTWomen of childbearing age feel great about giving birth, but the pain could be excruciating depending on their pain tolerances. Midwives requires obstetrical knowledge and skills such as pain management during labour and safety. We explored midwives' perspectives on the utilisation of pharmacological pain alleviation interventions during labour in selected hospitals in Matjhabeng Municipality, Free State province, South Africa. A qualitative study was undertaken, involving a sample of ten midwives, using a semi-structured interview guide. The intervie...

Prevalence of chronic respiratory symptoms among cement factory workers in Gauteng Province, South Africa
This study aimed to assess the prevalence of chronic respiratory symptoms among workers exposed to cement dust. A quantitative, descriptive cross-sectional design was employed among 81 workers from two cement production companies in Gauteng, South Africa in 2018. A self-administered questionnaire, anthropometric measurements, and a spirometry test were used as data collection tools. Data were analyzed using Wilcoxon rank sum, binary logistic regression, Pearson's chi-squared, and Fischer's exact tests. Respiratory symptoms such as wheezing, recurring blocked nose, sneezing/stuffy nose, fatigue/tiredness, rapid breathing, s...

News at a glance: ALS drug setback, controls on AI protein design, and rebuilding Ukrainian labs
DRUG DEVELOPMENT ALS drug comes up short in trial In a major setback for people suffering from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a drug approved in the United States and Canada in 2022 for the debilitating condition has failed in a 664-patient clinical trial, its maker, Amylyx Pharmaceuticals, said last week. Regulators approved the therapy, a combination of two compounds, despite their concerns that the evidence it provided a clinical benefit in a smaller study was weak. But treatment options for ALS are few. Amylyx says it will now spend 8 weeks consulting regulators and those affected by ALS...

Support, not blame: safe partner disclosure among women diagnosed with HIV late in pregnancy in South Africa and Uganda
CONCLUSION: HIV diagnosis late in pregnancy amplifies existing difficulties among pregnant women. Late ANC initiation is an indicator for the likelihood that a pregnant woman is highly vulnerable and needs safeguarding. Respective health programmes should be prepared to offer women initiating ANC late in pregnancy additional support and referral to complementary programmes to achieve safe partner disclosure and good health.PMID:38481233 | DOI:10.1186/s12981-024-00600-z (Source: AIDS Research and Therapy)

Tax revenue lost due to illicit cigarettes in South Africa: 2002-2022
Conclusions The South African government has been losing a significant amount of revenue by not receiving excise and VAT from all cigarettes consumed in South Africa. This trend is likely to continue if the government does not secure the supply chain from the point of production to the point of sale. (Source: BMJ Open)

Girls' experiences of cellphone porn use in South Africa and their accounts of sexual risk in the classroom
Cult Health Sex. 2024 Mar 13:1-15. doi: 10.1080/13691058.2024.2326846. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTViolence remains a persistent challenge in South African schools, prompting investigations into underlying risk factors and mitigation strategies. However, an under-explored aspect of this violence is the potential link between the consumption of Internet porn via cellphones among girls and boys, and girls' risks to sexual violence inside the classroom. To address this gap, we used focus group discussions with 14-17-year-old South African girls to examine their experiences of porn access via cellphones and their accounts of...

Pathophysiology of chikungunya virus infection associated with fatal outcomes
Cell Host Microbe. 2024 Mar 8:S1931-3128(24)00054-4. doi: 10.1016/j.chom.2024.02.011. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTChikungunya virus (CHIKV) is a mosquito-borne alphavirus that causes acute, subacute, and chronic human arthritogenic diseases and, in rare instances, can lead to neurological complications and death. Here, we combined epidemiological, virological, histopathological, cytokine, molecular dynamics, metabolomic, proteomic, and genomic analyses to investigate viral and host factors that contribute to chikungunya-associated (CHIK) death. Our results indicate that CHIK deaths are associated with multi-organ infecti...
