Omicron Is Coming: Can We Live With It?
Ryan Bourne andJeffrey A. SingerThe U.S. is about to be hit by a huge wave of infections from the COVID-19 omicron variant. Thoughit ’s unclear yet whether omicron isnaturally less severe than, say, the delta variant, South African and British case data shows just how quickly it spreads, with significant vaccine evasion and widespread anecdotal reports of COVID-19 reinfections.UK recorded daily cases, for example, have risen quickly to theirhighest level in the pandemic, despite not counting any reinfections as new cases. These numbers vastly understate true daily infections, because not all those infected test and there...

Is Omicron a sheep in wolf ’s clothing?
Make no mistake, the newest variant in the COVID-19 family is far more contagious than any of the others. Will it cause a drastic surge in the pandemic? Or could it have a mitigating influence? First identified in South Africa on November 11, Omicron quickly became the dominant variant in that country. In October, DeltaRead more …Is Omicron a sheep in wolf’s clothing? originally appeared inKevinMD.com. (Source: Kevin, M.D. - Medical Weblog)

A man in his 50s with acute chest pain, now resolved, has 2 undetectable troponins. CT Coronary Angiogram?
Written by Pendell MeyersA man in his 50s presented to the ED with chest pain described as pressure, without radiation, acute onset about three hours prior to arrival. He had had stuttering less severe versions of this pain all week that usually went away after a few minutes. He also had diaphoresis and dyspnea. He had extensive family history of CAD with CABG ' s in the mid 50s for multiple relatives, but he had no personal known history of CAD. It is unclear whether he had pain at the time of triage, but notes describe that his pain had subsided by the time of EM physician evaluation:Triage at approximately 21...

It ’ s not all Greek to me
By now, we’ve all heard the phrase “variant of concern” referring to a new form of the coronavirus that causes COVID-19. Technically, these variants have mutations that alter how well the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) virus infects our cells. If the new form of the virus is of concern it is usually because the mutations in the spike protein on the surface of the virus are likely to make it more infectious, faster spreading and/or to worse symptoms or lead to more deaths. The national and international health organisations assess new variants of which there are known to be hu...

Please remain calm
The world seems to be freaking out over the report of a new Covid-19 variant from South Africa. European countries are banning travel from southern Africa, financial markets are cratering, and of course it ' s all Joe Biden ' s fault.  Here ' s a reasonably measured explanation from the AP. The facts are:We don ' t actually know if this variant is any more transmissible than Delta, nor whether it is any less susceptible to immunity from vaccination or previous infection. There is no evidence that it causes more severe disease. The virus constantly mutates and new variants will continue to be found. If anything, thi...

COVID-19 Vaccine Patch Does Not Require Cold Chain Transport
Researchers at the University of Queensland and Vaxxas, a medtech company, announced the development of a high-density microarray patch (HD-MAP) that can deliver a COVID-19 vaccine through the skin without the need for needles. While such minimally invasive vaccine technology is to be welcomed, the major breakthrough is the temperature stability of the vaccine. The researchers were able to stabilize the formulation on the patch so that it can last for one month at room temperature and one week at 40 degrees Celsius (104 F), meaning that the new vaccine technology could help to overcome the cold chain transport hurdles. ...

In “Riding” Abortion, Is Greg Abbott Driving Texas Toward Divestiture?
By MIKE MAGEE Texas Governor Greg Abbott has been on a tear lately, and his central theme appears to be “revanchism.” Faced with declining demographics, he is retaliating against enemies and newcomers alike, aligning himself with slippery politicians and vigilantes. As they say in Texas, “He’s on a first-name basis with the bottom of the deck”, and the game he’s playing appears to be “South Africa – 1950.” The formal establishment of apartheid in South Africa occurred in 1948, though racial injustice had been baked in centuries earlier. Violence and intimidation, embedded in legislation su...

Every year I " do " Christopher Columbus
It no longer seems necessary since my view is suddenly becoming generally accepted. Buthere ' s an interesting piece on the origins of the observance. I don ' t think many people appreciate the stigma and discrimination once faced by Italian immigrants to the U.S. Like many the Irish and people from elsewhere in Southern and Eastern Europe, they didn ' t become " white " for at least a couple of generations. So the observance of Columbus day was important to the Italian-American community as a recognition that they are real Americans. However, as a federal holiday which carries symbolism for all Americans, it ' s a very bad...

Biden ’s Visa Ban for Africans
David J. BierThe Biden administrationis planning to roll out a  new policy in November that denies the right to travel or immigrate to the United States to anyone in the world who is unvaccinated. It will replace various nonsensical travel bans on Europeans, Chinese, Iranians, Brazilians, South Africans, and Indians, but a majority of the world (57 percent) has not received even a  single shot of any of the vaccines, andonly 1.9 percent of people in low ‐income countries have received at least one dose. This includes pretty much the entire continent of Africa.Currently, everyone —vaccinated or not—traveling to ...
