The Macro View – Health, Economics, and Politics and the Big Picture. What I Am Watching Here And Abroad.
July 28, 2022 Edition-----Sadly the war drags on, Biden seems to be pretty impotent on most policy fronts and the US seems to be heading into a recession. Not good,In the UK the choosing the next PM is off and running as the country and Europe are cooling down after a heatwave (for them) of biblical proportions! In OZ Parliament is meeting which is when the rubber will really hit the road as a new virus wave runs out of control still! We need to do more to control it as we realise just how bad long COVID is!-----Major Issues.-----https://www.afr.com/policy/economy/how-a-nobel-laureate-got-australian-economists-offside-...

China's Pacific Push Is Backfiring
Beijing has had only limited success in spreading its influence in the Pacific, with the notable exceptions of the Solomon Islands and Kiribati. To be sure, other victories should be expected to follow. The overall picture, however, is far more challenging for China. (Source: The RAND Blog)

The Macro View – Health, Economics, and Politics and the Big Picture. What I Am Watching Here And Abroad.
The objective most consistent with recent operations is to conquer Luhansk, Donetsk, and Kherson, with a view to their eventual annexation and Russification. But not only are they some way from achieving that (w ith much of Donetsk still in Ukrainian hands and the Russia position in Kherson highly contested) it would also require an explicit Ukrainian surrender for it to serve as the basis for a declaration of victory. That will not be forthcoming.-----https://www.afr.com/world/europe/how-britain-giggled-its-way-into-crisis-20220710-p5b0giHow Britain giggled its way into crisisBoris Johnson has exposed the costs of Britain...

The Macro View – Health, Economics, and Politics and the Big Picture. What I Am Watching Here And Abroad.
July 14, 2022 Edition-----The biggest news this week was the assassination of the ex-PM of Japan – Shinzo Abe – who was a good friend to OZ incidentally. In the US we have had a wind-up to a busy summit season – NATO etc – and the ongoing war in Ukraine which is becoming a deepening, protracted and horrible situation which it seems hard to resolve sadly. In the UK Boris is out but not gone and the battle for the succession is off and rolling. In OZ we have Albo back and we need to work out what to mitigate these various natural disasters and actually get on with it!!!! The response has been pathetic so far I reckon!--...

The Macro View – Health, Economics, and Politics and the Big Picture. What I Am Watching Here And Abroad.
June 09, 2022 Edition-----The Russian war on Ukraine is now well over 100 days old. The destruction and deaths are just awful and the world is being seriously re-shaped. Where this ends is unknowable but unlikely to be good.In the US we are seeing almost daily mass shootings and no-one seems to know what to do. Just pathetic. In the UK the hangover is slowly lifting after the 4 day royal celebration. In OZ we are having an energy crisis which we hope we will find solutions for soon!-----Major Issues.------https://www.theaustralian.com.au/business/economics/australias-labor-government-faces-a-whole-new-economic-ball-game/news...

… But There Are No Cases in Turkmenistan
written by Dr. Stephen A. Berger If you search the Internet for countries which have reported COVID-19, an endless variety of sources will describe the status of this disease in 207 countries and their dependencies. Few if any of these sites mention countries where this disease does not exist! As of April 19, GIDEON lists twenty-four countries (10.4% of the global total) that had not yet encountered a single case. Ironically, at this point, these countries enjoy a form of “medical isolation” – thanks to the disease itself! The chance that a traveler – let alone an infected traveler – can arrive in a new coun...

China Will Struggle to Shut Taiwan Out of the Pacific
With the decisions of the Solomon Islands and Kiribati to recognize Beijing over Taipei, the list of Taiwan ' s official diplomatic partners has decreased to 15. But China is likely to have a difficult time eliminating Taiwan ' s presence diplomatically in the Pacific. (Source: The RAND Blog)

Gluteomorphin: The opiate in your food
Yes: there are opiates that derive from various food proteins that exert peculiar effects on the human brain. The worst? The opiates that come from the gliadin protein of wheat and related grains. Opiate receptor researchers at the National Institutes of Health originally coined the term “gluteomorphin” nearly 40 years ago when it was determined that the gliadin protein of wheat undergoes partial digestion (since humans lack the digestive enzymes to fully digest proline-rich amino acid sequences in proteins from seeds of grasses) to yield peptides that are 4- to 5-amino acids long. Some of these peptides were ...

Measles: Correlation of Vaccine Uptake with Disease Rates
The following is a country-by-country analysis of measles reporting trends vs. vaccine uptake.  For purposes of consistency, incidence data and population statistics used to calculate rates per 100,000 will be limited to those published by the World Health Organization (WHO).  Resultant graphs were generated by Gideon and abstracted from the Gideon e-book series [1,2]  True estimates of vaccination update statistics are those published by WHO, in most cases available only since 1980.  Data published by the countries themselves were not used, to avoid possible bias or inconsistency when comparing data among countries. H...

Addressing The Gap In Noncommunicable Disease Data With Technology And Innovation
High-quality health data is the backbone of strong public health policies. When government officials and public health professionals understand the factors that influence health, they can make informed decisions about how and where to target public health interventions and resources.  In low- and middle-income countries, noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) account for 67 percent of deaths but only 1 percent of global health funding (see page 5). As the NCD epidemic reaches all countries—regardless of income level, high-quality, quickly accessible data that provide information about NCD risk factors are the lever for action....
