MRI shows effects of high blood pressure on the brain
High blood pressure has a negative effect on the brain's white matter -- and not just in older adults but in younger ones as well, researchers have reported. A study conducted by a team led by Junyeon Won, PhD, of Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital in Dallas found that diffusion-weighted MRI brain white matter metrics showed a connection between hypertension and white matter abnormalities. Their results were published March 15 in Hypertension. "[We found that] high blood pressure and high hypertension stage were associated with [diffusion-weighted MRI white matter brain characteristics]," the group wrote. High blood pre...

Calcifications on mammo could identify women at risk of CVD
Detecting breast arterial calcifications on routine mammograms could identify women at a higher risk of future cardiovascular disease (CVD), a study published March 13 in Clinical Imaging found. CT-FFR shows how smoking affects heart volume-to-myocardial mass ratio
Both current and former smokers show lower coronary volume-to-myocardial mass ratio (V/M) on CT fractional flow reserve (CT-FFR), researchers have found. In a study published March 14 in Radiology: Cardiothoracic Imaging, a team led by Kenneth Holmes, MD, of St Paul's Hospital and University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada, reported that smoking was associated with lower coronary volume-to-myocardial mass ratio in individuals with coronary artery disease (CAD) -- results that further cement the link between smoking and heart disease. Why You Suddenly Have Allergies
When Dr. Gailen Marshall was training to become a physician, he was taught that allergies were a kid thing. “Back in the day, the allergist’s office was full of children,” says Marshall, who is the president of the American College of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology. “If you ever thought about doing allergy testing or allergy shots in someone older than 40, that’s because you were just a money-grubbing doctor.” A lot has changed since then. In 2021, about a quarter of U.S. adults reported seasonal allergies, compared to 19% of children. [time-brightcove not-tgx=”true”] ...
