Only one spinal level for RFA with commercial insurance?
Im in PA, and some pts have UPMC insurance. I have been getting denials for 2 level MBB and RFA by UPMC insurance and have looked into the policy and procedure manual for UPMC commercial insurance (again NOT medicaid), but insurance small business owners actually pay for. Two things obviously jump out 1. No more than 1 level can be ablated in 12 months 2. Cannot ablate at level with spondylolisthesis. HAHAHAHA this is absolutely laughable. Has anyone else ran into anything like this? What... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Introduction to the SDN Pre-medical community
(Note: I posted this in the Nontraditional forum but decided to cross-post here because it is naturally much more active.) Good evening, fellow pre-meds! Selfishly, I thought it might be a good exercise - perhaps even cathartic - to write out my (very preliminary, exploratory, non-committal) plans. For some context, a little about me: 35+ year old male, married, young children under four. Sole breadwinner - work in sales (own a small business with 2 employees who are in support... Becoming a physician is not a ticket to the 1%
When you look at net worth (not income) in the USA the threshold to top 1% is about 11 mill. Due to the delayed earnings, most physicians never make it to this tier, even in high earning specialties. Most of the professions that make it now are financial (private equity, real estate investors/management, fund management) or entrepreneurial (small business owners, of which fewer and fewer are doctors). Being a doctor is still a good route to the top 10% but not 1%. Food for thought... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Retirement
So as I sit here in my house watching the snow fall, it dawned on me that I may not be able to be a pharmacist until retirement. I probably won't have to explain the reason for this. What are your thoughts on the next 15-20 years of our career and what to do next if there are no more pharmacist jobs in the near future? I actually thought about buying a small business while i'm still young and able to start something new. (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Independent Physicians being denied Paycheck Protection Program?
Doctor's offices being denied special small business loans Crucial small businesses have consistently failed to get funding under the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP), including doctor’s offices. www.kxxv.com "Many banks prioritized big bucks for big chains, like $20 million for Ruth’s Chris Steak House and $10 million for Shake Shack. A loophole in the program categorized those companies as a small businesses based on the number of workers at an individual location." (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Here's why i wont become a dentist, although i was accepted to school
DSO's and corporate dentistry are imo destroying dentistry as we know it today. As these larger entities take over, it will eventually drive out the small business owners. At least for me, when deciding my career, owning my own business and being my own boss was high on the list of priorities (obviously helping ppl ect. was there too ). At this point, it doesnt seem like that is going to happen. Its really sad and I'm at this point not going to continue on my path to becoming a dentist... How long should the lock down last?
We all know that the lock down for the last couple of weeks has already had an enormously negative effect on the economy. The national unemployment rate is approaching 15 percent. Small businesses all over shut their doors and may never be able to reopen them. Heck, even we, with our “super safe jobs,” are taking huge pay cuts in the form of lost RVUs and shortened or cancelled shifts. The economy aside, our mental health and our relationships with others will inevitably suffer. Call me a... How long should the lock down last? (Source: Student Doctor Network)

EIDL from the SBA Loans for Emergency Medicine Docs?
Kinda controversial, but here goes. I was hoping for everyone's opinions and what everyone plans to do. As a part of the CARES bailout including for small businesses there is a large amount allocated to small businesses to loan money for payrolls, rent, etc. (I am NOT an expert!) Some of these loans used for this purpose would be forgiven if used for payroll. It is prorated for high earners (greater than $100,000), but seems to still be available for doctors at this prorated amount. Are... EIDL from the SBA Loans for Emergency Medicine Docs? Prior authorization: biggest problem small radiation oncology practices are facing
Write your representatives to fix prior authorization. I know how much trouble it causes the little guy in the community. It's not like the real agenda is approval for protons or MRI viewray nonsense. Its helping small businesses. Please help. Forget about residency expansion. That's not real. This is. Stop everything you are doing and call your representative. (Source: Student Doctor Network)
