Exposed podcast … would you still apply to Columbia?
Just finished listening to the Exposed podcast about the coverup of sexual abuse by Columbia physician Robert Hadden. It sounds like the coverup goes all the way to the top, involving Mary D’Alton, who remains chair of OB/GYN. Does that make anyone hesitant to apply there? I’m not at that point yet, but idk if I would feel good about going somewhere with a culture that would keep that kind of person in power. (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Study on yelling
Just heard on the news today that a new study found yelling at kids was just as harmful as sexual or physical abuse. Here is a link Yelling at kids can be as harmful as sexual or physical abuse: study I don’t have time to look further into the study because I am too busy working with victims of severe early childhood trauma that wish that all they had experienced was yelling. In twenty years of clinical practice, I have yet to see the type of sequlae and long term effects that can... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Do application year activities "count"? (Specifically asking about Americorps)
Sorry to bother ya'll again. "Count" was poor phrasing, but I couldn't think of a better way. I am applying in 2023. I am on the fence on what I want to do for my application year after I graduate. I am entertaining the idea of Americorps again because my non-clinical volunteer hours are not yet where I want them to be, especially for service-focused schools. (It turned out rape crisis work I have been doing for a long time was clinical and not non-clinical like I thought it was. Oops.)... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Okay to list this as Clinical employment and then explain the situation?
Hi - I have been a medical advocate with a rape crisis center since 2014 with a couple-year break during the pandemic. They offer contractual pay if you exceed 24 total hours of call per month. I way exceed that. I like the work and need the money. The problem is that this is a new program (paying volunteers for excess call shifts) that just started this year. I didn't get paid my first several years here. I feel like I shouldn't list this as Volunteer-Clinical if I got 1099 pay towards... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

State senate just passed a bill making abortion illegal - no exception clause for mother ’s health
Indiana senate just passed a law banning abortion except in cases of rape or incest. They’ve conveniently left out the mother’s health exception clause. So what’s the game plan for treating ectopic pregnancies in these states? Serial ultrasounds until no fetal heart rate and then proceed with management? I can’t imagine the number of lives this will put at risk. Do you just keep resuscitating with blood the hemorrhaging patient that still has a fetal heart beat? Do you ship them to... Is a 505 enough to apply with rest of my app?
Hi! I graduated a year ago with a 3.75gpa (3.7cGPA) and feel like I have an ok application. - 3 pubs (1 first author, maternal health) - first responder for rape survivors (happened to me so I wanted to help others) - birth worker - reason my GPA is 3.75 is because I got assaulted finals week 1 semester but my university gave me a letter of support to send to med schools explaining the situation since that semester was an outlier -1000+ community service hours + narrative - pretty... WAMC DO: 506 MCAT/3.36 GPA after Sexual Assault and IA
I know. It looks bad. All of it. But I need some honesty because I don't think I'm being very honest with myself. I'm planning on applying by June. One quick thing: In my freshman year, I got raped by a classmate. The Title IX hearing took forever and all of it nearly destroyed me. My GPA dropped to a 2.5 for a semester after that but since then, I've had a fair upward trend, with last few semesters hovering around 3.6-3.8. The Institutional Action (4 years ago): The IA was after I... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Effect of "me-too" movement and Larry Nasser and Louis Riccardo scandals on how we practice our profession and my speciality choice?
I know Larry Nasser and Louis Riccardo are no longer practicing in Michigan and the "me-too" movement has basically come to an end but various state legislatures still continue to pass "chaperone laws" and any false accusation of sexual harassment or abuse from a single patient can result in the end of my career, right? But how should this affect my career? Am I always supposed to have one or two chaperones from now on for genital exams even if the patient is same gender as me? Or should I... Would this volunteering activity be considered clinical experience?
I’m a child advocate for my local health agency. It is a nonprofit organization that handles all children that experienced physical and/or sexual abuse. The officers would bring them here and I would then bring them back to the play area where we spend time with them (video games, movies, arts & crafts) until the social workers and therapists would take them to the investigation room to ask questions about the event. Sometimes, some of the cases require a medical examination to check the... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Friggin crooks
So one of my GI docs asks me to look at a case from last year sent by another doc to an outside lab, 6 part colon biopsy, UC vs diversion colitis. The outside lab did CD3 and Trichrome on all six parts, and billed for all of them. 88305x6, 88342x6 and 88313x6. This is why Anthem hates pathologists. If I raped the system like this I would be a billionaire by now. And no I am not tempted. This sh$t is not rare. (Source: Student Doctor Network)
