Inhibition of macrophage infectivity potentiator in Burkholderia pseudomallei suppresses pro-inflammatory responses in murine macrophages
DiscussionThese data highlight the potential to utilize Mip inhibitors in reducing potentially harmful pro-inflammatory responses resulting from B. pseudomallei infection in macrophages. This could be of significance since overstimulation of pro-inflammatory responses can result in immunopathology, tissue damage and septic shock. Hungatella hathewayi bacteremia due to acute appendicitis: A case report and a narrative review
This article presents the case of an 87-year-old Asian male admitted for a hyperosmolar hyperglycemic state with septic shock secondary to Hungatella hathewayi bacteremia originating from acute appendicitis. Remarkably, the bacterium was detected in the blood 48 hours before the emergence of clinical and radiographic evidence of acute appendicitis. Additionally, we conducted a literature review to identify all documented human infections caused by Hungatella species. Timely microbial identification in such cases is essential for implementing targeted antibiotic therapy and optimizing clinical outcomes.PMID:38521228 | DOI:1...

The use of thermal imaging for evaluation of peripheral tissue perfusion in surgical patients with septic shock
In this study, we aimed to evaluate the ability of central-to-peripheral temperature gradients using thermal imaging to predict in-hospital mortality in surgical patients with septic shock. (Source: BMC Anesthesiology)

Analysis of Neurosurgical Injuries and The Lessons Learned After the Catastrophic Double Earthquakes in Turkey
CONCLUSION: Neurosurgical injury is an important cause of post-earthquake mortality and morbidity. To ensure efficient medical rescue and judicious resource allocation, it is essential to recognize the characteristics of earthquake-related neurosurgical injuries. This study provides valuable information regarding the incidence, characteristics, and outcomes of neurosurgical injuries in earthquake-affected patients. Our findings highlight the need for prompt diagnosis and management of such injuries, particularly in those with concomitant systemic trauma.PMID:38497186 | DOI:10.5137/1019-5149.JTN.44593-23.3 (Source: Turkish Neurosurgery)

Severe Sepsis During Treatment for Childhood Leukemia and Sequelae Among Adult Survivors
CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE: In this cohort study of long-term outcomes in survivors of pediatric leukemia, severe sepsis during anticancer therapy for leukemia was associated with a selectively increased risk for development of serious neurocognitive sequelae. Efforts to reduce the effects of anticancer therapy on long-term function and quality of life in survivors might include prevention of severe sepsis during therapy and early detection or amelioration of neurocognitive deficits in survivors of sepsis.PMID:38497960 | DOI:10.1001/jamanetworkopen.2024.2727 (Source: Cancer Control)

Therapeutic potential of ramipril, losartan, and spironolactone against sepsis-associated liver tissue injury induced by cecal ligation and puncture in rats
CONCLUSIONS: Administration of ramipril, losartan, or spironolactone after CLP produced a hepatoprotective effect in rats, possibly by reducing oxidative stress, inflammation, and apoptosis.PMID:38497865 | DOI:10.26355/eurrev_202403_35596 (Source: Pharmacological Reviews)
