Adult safeguarding legislation: Navigating the borderlands between mental capacity, mental health and social care law and practice
Int J Law Psychiatry. 2024 Mar 11;94:101964. doi: 10.1016/j.ijlp.2024.101964. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAdult safeguarding legislation is contentious because it seeks to protect 'vulnerable' adults who fall between the borderlands of social care, mental health and mental capacity law. As a new and complex area of law and practice, further research on adult safeguarding legislation is required, in particular to consider it efficacy and human rights implications. Utilising a narrative literature review approach this article explores current research evidence on the Adult Support and Protection (Scotland) Act 2007 to cons...

Re ‐thinking youth work as initial mental health support for young people
This article draws upon research uncovering to what extent youth workers provide mental health support for young people. A survey questionnaire was distributed to youth workers across selected local authorities in central Scotland and north-east England. Our original findings show that most youth workers provide initial mental health support for young people and, since the pandemic, this has become a key component of youth work practice. The youth workers surveyed were confident that they had the skills, experience and training to provide such support but were struggling to meet increased demand due to funding shortages in...

Quality appraisal of clinical practice guidelines addressing massage interventions using the AGREE II instrument
ConclusionThe overall quality of the included guidelines was low, and most of the guidelines were not “recommended”. In future guideline updates, the existing evidence should be used, the professional composition of members of the expert group should be enriched, and patients’ values and preferences should be fully considered. It is necessary to clearly propose recognizable recommendations and strengthen the rigor and standardization of guideline formulation. Thus, clear standard guidelines can be formulated to better guide clinical practice. (Source: Systematic Reviews)

Embodied practice in a disembodied time: How the COVID ‐19 pandemic shaped direct work with children and young people
AbstractThe COVID-19 pandemic and related restrictions imposed in the UK had a significant impact on social work practice with children and young people. As has been widely reported, practitioners were deprived of multisensory information in their assessments and of opportunities to connect with children. In this article, we consider data from Scotland, created through interviews with practitioners during May 2021, a time of tentative optimism between periods of widespread lockdown. The Scottish policy context offers particular tensions and contrasts through which to understand how practice was impacted by physical distanc...

Stereotactic Radiation Therapy in Early Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer and Interstitial Lung Disease: A Nonrandomized Clinical Trial
CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE: In this trial, use of SABR in patients with fibrotic ILD met the prespecified acceptability thresholds for both toxicity and efficacy, supporting the use of SABR for curative-intent treatment after a careful discussion of risks and benefits.TRIAL REGISTRATION: ClinicalTrials.gov Identifier: NCT03485378.PMID:38451491 | DOI:10.1001/jamaoncol.2023.7269 (Source: Cancer Control)

Multi-omics subgroups associated with glycaemic deterioration in type 2 diabetes: an IMI-RHAPSODY Study
ConclusionsUsing an unsupervised network-based fusion method on plasma lipidomics and proteomics data from two independent cohorts, we were able to identify two subgroups of T2D patients differing in terms of disease severity. The molecular signatures identified within these subgroups provide insights into disease mechanisms and possibly new prognostic markers for T2D. (Source: Frontiers in Endocrinology)

The incidence of subsequent contralateral hip fracture and factors associated with increased risk: the IMPACT Contralateral Fracture Study
ConclusionOne in 40 (2.5%) hip fracture patients sustained a contralateral fracture within 12  months of their index fracture, and deprivation was associated with a reduced risk of contralateral fracture. No difference in 30-day mortality was found. (Source: Osteoporosis International)

New entrant farming policy as predatory inclusion: (Re)production of the farm through generational renewal policy programs in Scotland
AbstractNew entrant policy, literature, and research offers an important angle for exploring where dominant agrarianism is reproduced and contested. As new entrants seek access to land, finance, and expertise, their credibility is filtered through a cultural and policy environment that favors some farming models over others. Thus, seemingly apolitical policy tools geared at getting new people into farming may carry implicit norms of who these individuals should be, how they should farm, and what their values should entail. A normative gaze of farming often masks the financial, cultural, labor relation, and land tenure dime...

Estimating quality-adjusted life expectancy (QALE) for local authorities in Great Britain and its association with indicators of the inclusive economy: a cross-sectional study
Conclusions QALE can be estimated for LAs in GB, enabling further research into area-level health inequalities. The associations we identified between inclusive economy indicators and QALE highlight potential policy priorities for improving population health and reducing health inequalities. (Source: BMJ Open)
