The pain is usually a sharp shooting pain in the leg or down to the foot. Typically, it affects one side of the body (Figure 1). The sciatic nerve arises from the lumbosacral plexus. The sciatic nerve originates from L4, L5, S1, S2 and S3 (Figure 2). There are five nerve roots and each one has its own area of motor or sensory supply. The psychology of low back pain
Follow me at @srinipillay Low back pain is the second most common cause of disability in the U.S. Over 80% of people will experience an episode of this pain at some point in their lives. The most common reasons for low back pain are disc injuries, sciatica, lifting heavy objects, or some other non-specific back injury. Yet even though back pain is incredibly common, not all people respond in the same way to this often-disabling condition. In fact, even if two people have the same level of pain, their responses to that pain can be very different. These differing responses are due in part to different people’s psycholo...

The Muscle You've Never Heard of But Need to Know
By Leslie Goldman When it comes to a tight core, most people picture six-pack abs. But a truly toned core is much more than what you see on the surface. Deep within your loins, the psoas (pronounced SO-az) muscle group partners with other muscles to stabilize and girdle the lower spine, promoting proper body alignment. "It's our most important skeletal muscle," says Jo Ann Staugaard-Jones, an advanced Pilates and Hatha yoga instructor and author of The Vital Psoas Muscle: Connecting Physical, Emotional, and Spiritual Well-Being. "The psoas is the only muscle connecting the spine to the legs, so it serves as the sole link...
