Blog: Why Heart Unions Week is so important
I love UNISON. And I am so proud to lead the biggest union in the UK. It’s Heart Unions this week: a great chance for those of us who are already in a union – and love being in one – to share. I love the fact that UNISON’s 1.3 million members are keeping the country’s public services running during a pandemic that has lasted close to a year. I love the fact that UNISON supports and represents so many different workers, doing so many different jobs. It’s not just the obvious health, local government or education workers. It’s the people keeping our communities safe working in our police forces, or the staff h...

Blog: Governments would do well to listen to unions
There are tough choices ahead for all our members. The amazing people delivering essential public services that everyone relies on are now being hit by the cost-of-living crisis. Inflation is set to hit 8%, the national insurance increase is just months away, interest rates are climbing, and every month, pay packets are squeezed by rising food and energy bills. When everything is soaring but pay, the choice between heating and eating becomes real. Government failures will dramatically change people’s lives and push them from living a decent life into a struggle just to exist. But government action can shift that back too...

Blog: Investing in you is investing in our schools and in our pupils
Our streets, villages, towns and cities only thrive when unsung heroes roll up their sleeves to keep our public services going. In every neighbourhood, it’s local government workers who everyone relies on. And every day, UNISON campaigns to improve their pay and recognition for their essential work. From maintaining roads to ensuring public safety, their roles are indispensable. But workers find themselves grappling with inadequate pay and shrinking budgets in their workplaces. Pay fails to reflect the value of their work, and local council funding fails to keep up with the need in our communities. UNISON Scotland has be...

Tim Peake: Next stop Mars! | Aida Edemariam
It's been quite a week for Britain's first official astronaut. Meeting the prime minister, a press scrum at the Science Museum; and an agonising interview with Jeremy Paxman. How did he cope? There is something about human space flight that simultaneously feels both entirely futuristic and of the past; a future written into stories and dreams of the mid-20th century, rather than of the 21st. Britain's first official astronaut, after all, was born two years after the moon landing in 1969. "Eugene Cernan was the last person on the moon," adds Major Tim Peake, who was chosen this week for a mission to the International Space S...

Prevalence of advanced colorectal neoplasia in white and black patients undergoing screening colonoscopy in a safety-net hospital.
CONCLUSION: Black men are less likely than white men to have ACN at screening colonoscopy in a safety-net health care setting. Disparities in access to screening and differential exposure to modifiable risk factors rather than genetic or biological factors may be largely responsible for the higher incidence of CRC among black men. Genetic or biological factors may explain the predilection for proximal disease. PRIMARY FUNDING SOURCE: National Cancer Institute. PMID: 23817700 [PubMed - in process]

Cancer Patients Can Get ‘Chemo Brain'; Treatment Available
BOSTON (CBS) – Sixty-nine-year-old Susan Harden began her battle with breast cancer six years ago. “I had surgery,” explains Susan, “And that was followed by two different rounds of chemotherapy, followed by radiation.” Soon after her first round of chemo, Susan became confused. The former science teacher, quick-witted all her life, all of a sudden couldn’t remember how to do simple tasks. “I walked into the bathroom,” she says, ”I took my toothbrush in my hand, and I couldn’t figure out what to do next.” Susan went months without answers but then happened to mention her symptoms to a nurs...

Keep Up the Good Work: Teens are Drinking Less, Smoking Less, and Using Fewer Drugs
If you were in 8th, 10th, or 12th grade in January, you might have filled out a long survey asking (anonymously) whether you had used different drugs—including alcohol, cigarettes, and illicit drugs—and what your attitudes about drugs were. Every year NIDA asks more than 40,000 students in about 400 schools around the country to take part in our big survey, called Monitoring the Future, which helps us know what students think about drugs and how many people take them. Well, the 2014 results are in … and it’s mostly good news! For several years straight, teens have been drinking less alcohol, smoking fewer cigarette...

Mainstream media can help a physician online reputation
A continuing series on physician online reputation.   For more KevinMD minutes, please visit my YouTube channel Did you know that talking to mainstream media is a great way to define your reputation online? That’s because newspaper stories and television appearances eventually will find their way online, and it’s a great way to control the message that surrounds your name. An interview with the New York Times could be that piece of high ranking content that can push negative news stories or negative reviews on to the second page of results, and fewer than 10 percent of readers will even go onto the second page...
