What It Was Like to Witness the World ’s First Self-Sustained Nuclear Chain Reaction
Scientists achieved the first self-sustained nuclear chain reaction 75 years ago on Dec. 2, 1942, on an underground squash court beneath the University of Chicago’s Stagg Field. The brains behind the discovery was Enrico Fermi, a leader of the Manhattan Project who had won the 1938 Nobel Prize in Physics for work that led to the discovery of nuclear fission. Below is a narrative of that fateful day, from David N. Schwartz’s new biography of Fermi, The Last Man Who Knew Everything: On the morning of Wednesday, December 2, 1942, Chicago was in the grip of a cold snap. Tom Petty ’s Wisdom and Will Transformed American Music Forever
Tom Petty, who passed away on Tuesday at 66, felt like part of the rock firmament in a way that was different from your Pauls, your Micks, your Anguses. Both solo and with his storming backing band The Heartbreakers, Petty specialized in a loose-limbed style of rock that grooved as it felt utterly human, with Petty’s wizened voice, full of wisdom even when it was recounting the simplest boy-loses-girl yarns, leading the way. His formidable catalog, which spans the biting “Refugee” and the dreamy “Free Fallin’,” the sardonic “Into the Great Wide Open” and the gently menacing &...

While details about the firearms haven’t yet been released, Paddock fired hundreds of bullets into the crowd of concert-goers below, killing at least 50 people and wounding hundreds more. Recordings suggest he was using an automatic weapon. “Automatic weapon(s) like that — had to be num...
