Medtronic is developing a fully-implantable left ventricular assist device. The Dublin-based company announced Tuesday it had received breakthrough device designation for the technology.
Current LVAD systems, including the HVAD Medtronic inherited when it acquired HeartWare International for $1.1 billion in 2016, are connected to a driveline cable that extends outside the body to a controller. This is then connected to power sources (AC or DC adapter, batteries).

Medtronic (NYSE:MDT) today touted stroke data from the Lateral trial of its HeartWare HVAD left ventricular assist device involving implantation via thoracotomy instead of open surgery.
With a thoracotomy implantation, surgeons insert the pump via a small, lateral incision between the left ribs and make a second small incision to accommodate the pump’s outflow graft. Medtronic (NYSE:MDT) today touted more data on the HeartWare left-ventricular assist device it acquired in 2016, saying economic analyses of prior trials showed its cost effectiveness.

Belgian EPP Study Shows Mesothelioma Surgery Extends Survival
Using proper patient selection, doctors in Leuven, Belgium, are extending mesothelioma survival times significantly with the controversial extrapleural pneumonectomy surgery.
Despite a growing reluctance to perform the surgery within the United States and throughout much of Europe, mesothelioma specialists at University Hospitals KU Leuven have continued performing it with great success.
Their 2018 single-center study of the extrapleural pneumonectomy (EPP) for pleural mesothelioma produced a 33.2-month median survival and a 24.2 percent five-year survival.
