Deciding between NCC and Stroke
Hey all I am a current PGY2 and struggling to decide between neuro-critical care and stroke. I would ideally practice both but would preferably avoid doing both fellowships. My interest in stroke initially propelled me into neurology. I've realized though that stroke also often deals with a high number of functional patients which I don't enjoy as much, and being in the neuro ICU has the satisfaction of dealing with patients that are all very truly ill. I think another pro of NCC is that... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

VIV TMVR with Sapien 3
80 y/o s/p cabg 20 years ago. Redo sternotomy for severe Mitral regurgitaiton 15 years ago. Other hx: Bil Fem-pop bypass, h/o stroke, severe COPD and severe pulm htn on ATC O2. Chronic pain, CKD, etc. Presented at valve conference for failure of mitral bpv. Mean gradient of 15 mmHg. It was decided that we would proceed with VIV TMVR with a Sapien 3. On paper, it sounded like a bad idea. Once I met the patient, it was clear to me she wanted this done as her severe MS was going to... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

how much do you consult
so question for the community. I trained somewhere that we consulted the relevant fields for 'interesting' cases, largely so the residents could get a head start on seeing the case. OBVIOUSLY we consulted for strokes and STEMI and such that needed immediate admission and intervention.... but also would consult on cool stuff. Otherwise, we would most just admit and let the inpatient team do consultology. But because there were lots of residents who would benefit from seeing all the random... I wish patients knew what the ER was for
<rant> I'm on shift, and this nice lady kept on asking me about bumps on her neck. I told her several times that I'm here just to make sure she didn't have a stroke (she came in dizzy). Finally her husband said "HONEY....he's not going to figure that out!" "Ohhhh...honey you don't have to be mean about it. I was just asking." Non stop today...people asking me about crap that I will never know the answer. It just gets so tiresome. "If I had to know everything about everything in... vascular neurology fellowship applicants for 2025 thread
Hi all! I don't know any other applicants from my residency program so I thought I would post to connect with others in the same boat for support! When do people generally start hearing about interviews and when do interviews happen? What are they interview vibes? I've heard from prior applicants in other sub-specialities that they are trying to woo you and that it is overall more casual than residency interviews but I'm not sure if it is the same for stroke. Good luck everyone! (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Standard mid-cycle silence panic post
lol not to add to this string of similar posts, but I've somehow made it thus far with 3 MD IIs (which I'm very excited about / think the interviews went okay!) but also have not heard from,,,, the other 23 MD schools I applied to. No rejections no updates, just silence. am I sunk at those schools? I know most IIs have probably been sent, but is it possible that it's just an odd stroke of randomness/unluckiness that I haven't heard anything from anyone? (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Tele companies experience?
I am looking into possible teleneuro opportunities. I have contacted 1 company so far ( specialist telemed ). Would like to know if you have any experiences with any companies and if you may tell me what it’s like and if you have any recommendations. I am interested in tele-stroke or acute tele neurology positions. For example, with the above company, they have 12 hr shifts acute inpatient and I get put into a “pod” system. Am I going to be stuck infront of a screen the whole 12 hours? What... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

What subspecialties can have a week on, week off schedule in academia?
I’ve realised a week on, week off schedule is the most valuable thing for me in terms of being able to visit my family in another country more often. At the same time, I do want to remain in academia (and the low salary isn’t a problem for me as I do have another source of income and don’t have loans). I know stroke and NCC are doable, but are other specialties like epilepsy also possible? At my residency, the epileptologists have a normal clinic schedule and not a week on week off schedule... So state caps on malpractice awards are …useless? ER doc lost in state with $400K cap, $13.5M given to patient
Idaho awards second-largest medical malpractice settlement after a patient has a stroke in the ER | MDLinx An Idaho man was awarded $13.5 million after a local hospital failed to diagnose his stroke for over 12 hours. www.mdlinx.com Did a search and didn’t see this posted here but this seems…horrific. Like what did the ER doc actually do wrong…? “A jury in Ada County, Idaho, has awarded $13.5 million, the second-largest medical malpractice award in the state’s history, to a stroke survivor in a case against a physician from Emergency Med...

Am I the dingus?
60 y/o F pops on the board with cc of "possible stroke". I go to the room, the patient is in CT, I speak with the husband. She just received a call from her sister and daughter who hate her, and as of 3.75hrs ago she has been having "memory problems" but he denies any other neuro symptoms. I explain his wife will be back from CT soon. Wife comes back. I do a quick exam. I cannot identify a single subjective or objective focal deficit. I explain that the neurologist will speak with her... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)
