A narrative review on the application of high-intensity focused ultrasound for the treatment of occlusive and thrombotic arterial disease
CONCLUSIONS: In current preclinical and clinical data, the safety and efficacy of HIFU shows great promise in the treatment of atherosclerotic arterial disease. Noninvasive Treatment-Efficacy Evaluation for HIFU Therapy Based on Magneto-Acousto-Electrical Tomography
Conclusion: The axial interval can be used as the indictor to evaluate the size of HIFU ablation with the minimum axial width of one wavelength. Significance: The favorable results demonstrate the feasibility of real-time treatment-efficacy evaluation for HIFU therapy using the MAET technology and suggest potential applications in clinical practice.

Validation of an intracardiac ultrasonic therapy –imaging dual mode transducer
In this study we have developed a novel dual-mode intracardiac echocardiography catheter capable of performing ultrasound imaging and high-intensity focused ultrasound ablation. Using the same device we demonstrate in vivo the feasibility of intracardiac shear-wave elastography to evaluate thermal ablation as well as the feasibility of creating transmural and linear lesions (up to 10-mm wide) in the atrial wall.

High intensity focused ultrasound ablation for atrial fibrillation: results from the National Spanish Registry.
CONCLUSIONS: The Spanish national registry showed an efficacy of AF ablation with the HIFU Epicor system of 66.1%, 63.8%, 63.9% and 45.9% at 6, 12, 24 and 36 months follow-up. There was no device-related complications. PMID: 26006216 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Thrombolysis using multi-frequency high intensity focused ultrasound at MHz range: an in vitro study.
In this study, multi-frequency acoustic waves at MHz range (near 1.5 MHz) were introduced as HIFU excitations to reduce the required power for treatment as well as the treatment time. In vitro bovine blood clots weighing around 150 mg were treated by single-frequency and multi-frequency HIFU. The pulse length was 2 ms for all experiments except the ones where the duty cycle was changed. High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound Sonothrombolysis: The Use of Perfluorocarbon Droplets to Achieve Clot Lysis at Reduced Acoustic Power
The purpose of this study was to evaluate use of intravascular perfluorocarbon droplets to reduce the sonication power required to achieve clot lysis with high-intensity focused ultrasound. High-intensity focused ultrasound with droplets was initially applied to blood clots in an in vitro flow apparatus, and inertial cavitation thresholds were determined. An embolic model for ischemic stroke was used to illustrate the feasibility of this technique in vivo. Recanalization with intravascular droplets was achieved in vivo at 24 ± 5% of the sonication power without droplets.

ConclusionA simple, cost effective, portable positioning device has been developed which can be used in virtually any clinical MRI scanner since it can be placed on the table of the MRI scanner.
