Effect of Underwater Treadmill Gait Training With Water-Jet Resistance on Balance and Gait Ability in Patients With Chronic Stroke: A Randomized Controlled Pilot Trial
Conclusions: Our results demonstrated that underwater treadmill gait training with water-jet resistance is effective in improving static and dynamic balance as well as gait abilities in chronic stroke patients. Thus, training using underwater treadmill gait training with water-jet resistance may be useful in facilitating active rehabilitation in chronic stroke patients.

Depth Sensor-Based Assessment of Reachable Work Space for Visualizing and Quantifying Paretic Upper Extremity Motor Function in People with Stroke.

Stepping After Stroke: Walking Characteristics in People With Chronic Stroke Differ on the Basis of Walking Speed, Walking Endurance, and Daily Steps.
CONCLUSIONS: Walking characteristics differed on the basis of walking speed, walking endurance, and daily steps. Differences in daily steps between household and community ambulators were largely due to shorter and fewer walking bouts. Modifiable Factors Associated With Poststroke Physical Activity at Discharge From Rehabilitation: Prospective Cohort Study.
CONCLUSION: The results demonstrated that better physical function at discharge from inpatient rehabilitation was associated with future increased levels of physical activity. Additionally, higher levels of motivation impacted on increased physical activity participation. The influence of anxiety on physical activity participation requires further exploration. Motor imagery as a complementary technique for functional recovery after stroke: a systematic review.

Is self or caregiver report comparable to Medicare claims indicators of healthcare utilization after stroke?
Conclusion Healthcare utilization after stroke can be reliably assessed from Medicare claims, Stroke participant, or Caregiver report for salient events such as hospitalizations and Emergency Room visits. Self-report and caregiver report appear to be less reliable for identifying use of therapy or home health services. Conclusions The strategy of asking patients to perform exercises alone, in the practice or at home, is still not accepted by a large proportion of physical therapy professionals as compared with students or with physicians. Most therapists still see a <5-h weekly duration of exercise as sufficient after stroke. The efficacy of treadmill training on balance dysfunction in individuals with chronic stroke: a systematic review.
CONCLUSIONS: This review recognized moderate evidence in favor of TT interventions in balance and stroke rehabilitation programs. With TT, intensity may be a more critical factor than specificity and may offer additional carryover to recovery parameters of postural control and balance, beyond gait performance. It is recommended that clinicians utilizing TT incorporate objective measures of balance to assess the potential for skill transference and improvements in balance. The effect of a whole-body vibration therapy on the sitting balance of subacute stroke patients: a randomized controlled trial.
CONCLUSION: Our results suggest that WBV therapy led to improvement of the recovery in balance recovery for subacute stroke patients. Because the WBV therapy was as effective as conventional physical therapy, we can consider a WBV therapy as a clinical method to improve the sitting balance of subacute stoke patients. Effects of low-frequency repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation and neuromuscular electrical stimulation on upper extremity motor recovery in the early period after stroke: a preliminary study.
CONCLUSION: LF-rTMS with or without NMES seems to facilitate the motor recovery in the paretic hand of patients with acute/subacute ischemic stroke. TMS or the combination of TMS + NMES may be a promising additional therapy in upper limb motor training. Comparison of the effects on dynamic balance and aerobic capacity between objective and subjective methods of high-intensity robot-assisted gait training in chronic stroke patients: a randomized controlled trial.
CONCLUSION: High-intensity RAGT at 70% of HRR significantly improved dynamic balance and aerobic capacity more than RAGT at RPE of 15. These results suggest that high-intensity RAGT at 70% of HRR is safe and effective for improving dynamic balance and aerobic capacity in chronic stroke. Kinesthetic taping improves walking function in patients with stroke: a pilot cohort study.
CONCLUSION: The results of this study indicate that kinesthetic taping of the anterior thigh and knee provides an immediate improvement in walking function in patients with stroke. Mental practice and mirror therapy associated with conventional physical therapy training on the hemiparetic upper limb in poststroke rehabilitation: a preliminary study.

ConclusionsThe combination of a negative cardiac screen and the absence of exercise tolerance test failure appeared to have a high negative predictive value for cardiac events during treatment, despite the likelihood of a high prevalence of coronary artery disease in our population.

Predictors and Biomarkers of Treatment Gains in a Clinical Stroke Trial Targeting the Lower Extremity Clinical Sciences
Conclusions— A multimodal model incorporating behavioral and fMRI measures best predicted treatment-induced changes in gait velocity in a clinical trial setting. Results also suggest potential use of fMRI measures as biomarkers of treatment gains.

Selecting measures for balance and mobility to improve assessment and treatment of individuals after stroke.
This article utilizes a case-based approach to describe the benefits of using a common set of outcome measures and a process for selecting optimal measures across body structure/function, activity, and participation domains of the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) model and stages of stroke recovery. Specific measures for use in acute care, rehabilitation, outpatient, and home health care settings are discussed based on StrokEDGE task force recommendations by the Neurology Section of the American Physical Therapy Association.
