Survivability of patients admitted for stroke in a primary stroke center, Penang, Malaysia: a retrospective 5-year study
CONCLUSION: The findings of the study are intended to encourage more non-stroke hospitals in Malaysia to increase their efforts in treating stroke patients, as early treatment can help reduce the severity of the stroke. With the incorporation of evidence-based data, this study also contributes to local data for comparison and improves the implementation of regularly prescribed stroke medication.PMID:37131240 | PMC:PMC10152713 | DOI:10.1186/s40360-023-00669-8

Predicting Statin Adherence Following Hospital Discharge for Acute Coronary Syndromes: What ’s the Score?
The use of statins following acute coronary syndromes (ACS) is well documented to improve mortality and reduce hospitalisation, revascularisation and risk of stroke [1], and has become a frequently used benchmark to audit in-hospital care of such patients. Much less is known about adherence to statins following discharge —and the factors influencing this—which is the subject of the paper by Liao et al. in this edition of Heart, Lung and Circulation [2].

Optimising Secondary Prevention: a One Year Review of Lipid Lowering Therapy (LLT) and Cholesterol Monitoring in Patients Undergoing Carotid Surgery
Objective: Stroke is common (100 000 new cases annually in the UK), with carotid atherosclerotic disease a recognised cause.1 In such cases patients may require either surgical or endovascular carotid intervention but they should also receive optimal medical therapy including lipid lowering therapy (LLT).2 Statins have been shown to reduce the 10 year risk of stroke/death (17.9% vs. 7.6%) after carotid endarterectomy.3 Current European Society for Vascular Surgery (ESVS) Guidelines advise high intensity statin (HIS) treatment with a target LDL C level of

Medical Management of Dyslipidemia for Secondary Stroke Prevention: Narrative Review
Medicina (Kaunas). 2023 Apr 17;59(4):776. doi: 10.3390/medicina59040776.ABSTRACTDyslipidemia is a major risk factor for stroke, following hypertension, diabetes, and smoking, and is an important risk factor for the prevention and treatment of coronary artery disease and peripheral vascular disease, including stroke. Recent guidelines recommend considering low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C)-lowering therapies, such as statins (preferably), ezetimibe, or proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin type 9 (PCSK9) inhibitors to prevent the occurrence or recurrence of stroke, adhering to the "lower is better" approach. In t...
