Fibroblast Growth Factor-23 and Risk of Cardiovascular Diseases: A Mendelian Randomization Study
CONCLUSIONS: Genetically predicted FGF-23 levels are not associated with atherosclerotic and nonatherosclerotic cardiovascular diseases, suggesting no important causal link.PODCAST: This article contains a podcast at https://dts.podtrac.com/redirect.mp3/www.asn-online.org/media/podcast/CJASN/2023_01_10_CJN05080422.mp3.PMID:36719157 | DOI:10.2215/CJN.05080422

Severe Neurological Involvement in an Adult with Shiga Toxin-Producing < i > Escherichia coli < /i > -Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome Treated with Eculizumab
A 68-year-old man with a medical history of hypertension was admitted to the emergency department for diffuse abdominal pain preceded by bloody diarrhea. Upon admission, neurological examination was normal, but he suddenly developed a left-sided hemiparesis. After a normal brain computed tomography, intravenous thrombolysis was administered for a suspicion of ischemic stroke. In the first laboratory investigations, hemoglobin was 16.9 g/dL, platelets 121 × 109/L (150 –450), and serum creatinine 1.17 mg/dL. By the second hospital day, the platelet level dropped to 79 × 109/L, with haptoglobin at 0.12 g/L, 3% schistocyte...

Aspirin (ASA) has been postulated to improve cardiovascular outcomes in at-risk individuals, although the extent of protection remains controversial. The effect of ASA on cardiovascular outcomes in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) was examined in The International Polycap Study-3 (TIPS-3). Patients were treated with low-dose ASA (75 mg/d) or placebo and stratified by estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR). The investigators looked at a composite outcome of nonfatal myocardial infarction, nonfatal stroke, and cardiac death.

Clinicohistological Profile and Outcomes of Rapidly Progressive Glomerulonephritis: A Prospective Study from North India
This study included 40 patients of biopsy-proven RPGN. The diagnosis of RPGN was based on renal histology showing crescents in >50% of glomeruli. All patients were given induction with intravenous (IV) methylprednisolone (0.5 g) for three days followed by maintenance with oral prednisolone (1 mg/kg/day) and six IV pulses of cyclophosphamide (0.5 g) given fortnightly followed by maintenance therapy with azathioprine (2 mg/kg/day). The outcomes were recorded. Three-fourth of the patients (77.4%) required renal replacement therapy (RRT) at diagnosis. More than half of patients (57.5%) were antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibo...
