Left Atrial Appendage Mechanical Exclusion: Procedural Planning Using Cardiovascular Computed Tomographic Angiography
Left atrial appendage (LAA) mechanical exclusion is being investigated for nonpharmacologic stroke risk reduction in selected patients with atrial fibrillation. There are multiple potential approaches in various stages of development and clinical application, each of which depends on specific cardiothoracic anatomic characteristics for optimal performance. Multiple imaging modalities can be utilized for application of this technology, with transesophageal echocardiography used for intraprocedural guidance. Cardiovascular computed tomographic angiography can act as a virtual patient avatar, allowing for the assessment of ca...

Perioperative stroke associated in-hospital morbidity and in-hospital mortality in common non-vascular non-neurological surgery
This study identified perioperative stroke as an independent predictor of 30-day in-hospital morbidity and mortality following non-vascular, non-neurological surgery.

Resection of left atrial appendage aneurysm and full maze procedure as curative management for stroke recurrence
We report a case of LAAA in a 63-year-old woman with stroke. After stabilization of ischemic cerebral stroke, the patient underwent left atrial appendectomy with full maze procedure and tricuspid annuloplasty under cardiac arrest with cardiopulmonary bypasss. She has been living a healthy life without anticoagulants postoperatively. Resection and the full-maze procedure is an efficacious and durable procedure for LAAA with chronic atrial fibrillation.

A Case of Cardiogenic Stroke After Thoracoscopic Left Atrial Appendectomy.
We report this case to introduce how we evaluate the risk of postoperative cardiogenic stroke by means of contrast-enhanced cardiac computed tomography (CT), and how we formulate the postoperative patient management strategy including short-term oral anticoagulation therapy by using results of cardiac CT. Thoracoscopic left atrial appendectomy and thoracic endovascular aortic repair (TEVAR) in a patient with cardiogenic stroke combined with acute aortic dissection
AbstractThe simultaneous occurrence of cardiogenic stroke and acute aortic dissection is rare, and its treatment remains unclear. Although anticoagulation therapy is usually chosen for cardiogenic stroke due to atrial fibrillation, it is inappropriate for acute aortic dissection. Recently, thoracoscopic left atrial appendectomy (TLAA) has been suggested as an alternative for anticoagulation. We herein report a case of a 78-year-old man with combined cardiogenic stroke and acute aortic dissection in whom thoracic endovascular aortic repair (TEVAR) was performed after TLAA. Although anticoagulants were discontinued after TLA...

Deriving literature-based benchmarks for surgical complications in high-income countries: a protocol for a systematic review and meta-analysis
This study of secondary data does not require ethics approval. It will be presented internationally and published in the peer-reviewed literature. Results will inform a future quality improvement tool and provide benchmarks of surgical complication rates within HICs. Trial registration International Prospective Register of Systematic Reviews (PROSPERO). Registration number CRD42016037519.

Stroke prevention following modified endoscopic ablation and appendectomy for atrial fibrillation
We reported the results of stroke prevention following modified endoscopic procedure for atrial fibrillation. 82 patients underwent modified endoscopic procedure for atrial fibrillation (AF), in whom 47 had paroxysmal, 28 had persistent, and 7 had long-standing atrial fibrillation. CHA2DS2VASC median score was 3 (range from 0 to 8). The procedure was performed on the beating heart, through 3 ports on the left chest wall. Pulmonary vein isolation and ablation of the left atrium were achieved by bipolar radiofrequency ablation. Left atrial appendage (LAA) was excluded by stapler. Brain CT, cardiac CT and 24-h Holter monitori...

Health inequalities: an analysis of hospitalizations with respect to migrant status, gender and geographical area
Conclusions: The results of this study may reflect inequalities in the quality of health care, in particular in primary and secondary prevention, access to specialized care and inappropriateness, due to migrant status and gender. Also, differences between macro-areas suggest heterogeneities in the integration policies and the promotion of immigrants’ health. Research should be endorsed in this field in order to further describe inequalities and their reasons and in the light of supporting policies development.

Surgical Procedures and Outcomes Among Children with Sickle Cell Disease.
CONCLUSION:: Surgical procedures such as cholecystectomy, tonsillectomy, splenectomy, hernia repair, and appendectomy account for a small but significant proportion of hospital admissions in children with sickle cell disease. Acute chest syndrome is among the most common complications of elective surgery, while stroke and death are rare. PMID: 24108258 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

337-i * thoracoscopic left atrial appendectomy
Conclusions: This approach demonstrated feasibility, safety and effectiveness and should be considered as a possible alternative to percutaneous closure of the LAA. However, its effect on long-term prevention of stroke needs to be evaluated.

Increased risk of ischemic stroke in cervical cancer patients: a nationwide population-based study
Background: Increased risk of ischemic stroke has been validated for several cancers, but limited study evaluated this risk in cervical cancer patients. Our study aimed to evaluate the risk of ischemic stroke in cervical cancer patients. Methods: The study analyzed data from the 2003 to 2008 National Health Insurance Research Database (NHIRD) provided by the National Health Research Institutes in Taiwan. Totally, 893 cervical cancer patients after radiotherapy and 1786 appendectomy patients were eligible. The Kaplan-Meier method and the Cox proportional hazards model were used to assess the risk of ischemic stroke. Results...
