Hospitalized Infection as a Trigger for Acute Ischemic Stroke: The Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities Study Clinical Sciences
Conclusions— These results support the hypothesis that hospitalized infection is a trigger of ischemic stroke and may explain some cryptogenic strokes. Infection control efforts may prevent strokes. CVD preventive therapies may prevent strokes if used in the peri-infection period, but clinical trials are needed.

Carotid Atherosclerosis and Stroke in Atrial Fibrillation: The Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities Study Brief Reports
Conclusions— Increased cIMT and presence of carotid plaque are associated with increased risk of ischemic stroke in individuals with AF. Furthermore, they may improve risk prediction of stroke, over and above the CHA2DS2-VASc score.

Psychological and emotional needs, assessment, and support post-stroke: a multi-perspective qualitative study.
DISCUSSION: Stroke patients need better access to psychological support, including information, advice, and peer or social support. More research is required to establish the effectiveness of alternative options to formal psychological support. PMID: 27309492 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Thrombus Histology Suggests Cardioembolic Cause in Cryptogenic Stroke Clinical Sciences
Conclusions— Quantitative evaluation of thrombus composition may help to distinguish between different stroke causes. Our findings support the notion that the majority of cryptogenic strokes are cardioembolic.

High-Sensitive C-Reactive Protein Predicts Recurrent Stroke and Poor Functional Outcome: Subanalysis of the Clopidogrel in High-Risk Patients With Acute Nondisabling Cerebrovascular Events Trial Clinical Sciences
Conclusions— High hsCRP levels predict recurrent stroke and poor functional outcome in acute patients with minor stroke or transient ischemic attack. Clinical Trial Registration— URL: http://www.clinicaltrials.gov. Unique identifier: NCT00979589.

Left Ventricular Ejection Fraction and Risk of Stroke and Cardiac Events in Heart Failure: Data From the Warfarin Versus Aspirin in Reduced Ejection Fraction Trial Clinical Sciences
Conclusions— In patients with systolic HF and sinus rhythm, LVEF is inversely associated with death and its components, whereas an association with stroke exists for very low LVEF values. An interaction with warfarin treatment on stroke risk may exist. Clinical Trial Registration— URL: http://www.clinicaltrials.gov. Unique identifier: NCT00041938.

Care Received by Elderly US Stroke Survivors May Be Underestimated Clinical Sciences
Conclusions— Although stroke survivors are known to require considerable caregiving resources, our findings suggest that previous assessments may underestimate hours of care received and hence costs.

Blood Pressure, Carotid Flow Pulsatility, and the Risk of Stroke: A Community-Based Study Clinical Sciences
Conclusions— CSBP and common carotid PI jointly and independently predicted future stroke. Carotid flow pulsatility may play an important role in the development of stroke.

Do Commonly Used Functional Outcome Measures Capture Activities that Are Relevant for People with Stroke in India?
In this study, we aimed to evaluate the cultural validity of five frequently used stroke-specific FOMs by comparing their contents with the problems reported by patients with stroke in India. METHODS: Face-to-face structured interviews were conducted with 152 patients diagnosed with stroke in India. Problems and goals identified by the patients were compared to each item included in the FOMs used in stroke rehabilitation. RESULTS: The Stroke Impact Scale (SIS) and the Frenchay Activities Index (FAI) include items related to the most frequently identified problems. However, neither covers problems related to the n...

Independently ambulant, community-dwelling stroke survivors have reduced cardiorespiratory fitness, mobility and knee strength compared to an age- and gender-matched cohort.
CONCLUSIONS: Despite being independently ambulant and community dwelling, the CRF, walking speed and leg strength of this group were reduced compared to non-stroke comparison participants. These patients may benefit from undertaking targeted exercise programmes. PMID: 27670905 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Association of Secondhand Smoke With Stroke Outcomes Clinical Sciences
Conclusions— Individuals with previous stroke have 50% greater odds to have been exposed to SHS; SHS is associated with a 2-fold increase in mortality after stroke. This study highlights the importance of obtaining exposure to SHS history and counseling patients and their families on the potential impact of SHS on poststroke outcomes.
