Determinants of Informal Care, Burden, and Risk of Burnout in Caregivers of Stroke Survivors Clinical Sciences
Conclusions—This study reveals the heavy burden borne by the caregivers of stroke survivors. Our analysis also identifies explanatory and predictive variables for the likelihood of receiving informal care, caregiver burden, and high risk of burnout.

Motor imagery as a complementary technique for functional recovery after stroke: a systematic review.
Conclusions: The use of MI combined with conventional rehabilitation is an effective method for the recovery of functionality after stroke. Due to the great heterogeneity in the scientific literature available, new lines of research are necessary, in order to include well-designed studies of good methodological quality and to establish a consensus regarding the most appropriate protocols. How to unfasten the Spanish Stroke Belt? Andalusia chooses research
Andalusia in southern Spain, one of the largest regions in the European Union, has made a profound economic and social transformation that has led to establishment of a modern universal public health care system. However, due to its high stroke mortality rates, Andalusia is still known as the ‘Spanish Stroke Belt’. To fight these figures, successive initiatives culminated in the launch of the Andalusian Plan for Stroke Care, to be developed during the period of 2011 to 2014. In addition, involved professionals have hypothesized that clinical and experimental research may contribute to improving stroke care in our commu...

Stroke Subtypes and Comorbidity among Ischemic Stroke Patients in Brasilia and Cuenca: A Brazilian–Spanish Cross-cultural Study
Background: With the increase in life expectancy worldwide, changes in stroke subtypes and burden of stroke population are expected in both developing and developed countries. Prevalence of stroke subtypes and comorbidity in ischemic stroke patients was assessed in Brasilia, Brazil, and Cuenca, Spain. Methods: This was an international (Brazilian-Spanish) cross-sectional study. Stroke subtypes were assessed by means of Trial of ORG 10172 in Acute Stroke Treatment (TOAST) classification. Modified Rankin scale was used to measure functional recovery and the Cumulative Illness Rating Scale for Geriatrics (CIRS-G) was used to a...

Socioeconomic Factors Predicting Depression Differ in the Acute Stage and at 1 year After Ischemic Stroke or TIA
The most prevalent psychiatric complication after stroke is depression. Clinically relevant depressive symptoms appear in about one third of cases after stroke.1,2 The frequency of post stroke depression (PSD) is highest in the first year after stroke.3 In a recent Spanish survey of patients with TIA and minor stroke 43.9 % had post stroke depression (PSD) at 10 days after the cerebrovascular event and 8.6 % of patients had PSD 12 months later.4 Severity of depressive symptoms often changes in the first year after stroke.

Cognitive performance following lacunar stroke in Spanish‐speaking patients: results from the SPS3 trial
ConclusionsMild cognitive impairment in Secondary Prevention of Small Subcortical Strokes Spanish‐speaking patients with recent lacunar stroke is highly prevalent but has a different pattern to that observed in English‐speaking patients. A combination of socio‐demographics, stroke biology, and stroke care may account for these differences.

Biological age is better than chronological as predictor of 3-month outcome in ischemic stroke
Conclusions: B-age, estimated by DNA methylation, is an independent predictor of ischemic stroke outcome regardless of chronological years.

Multidimensional analysis of sedentary behaviour and participation in Spanish stroke survivors (Part&Sed-Stroke): a protocol for a longitudinal multicentre study
Introduction Stroke survivors usually experience long-lasting functional, emotional and social consequences that might contribute to sedentary behaviour and participation restrictions, which are important targets to address during rehabilitation. However, the trajectory and inter-relationship between these factors are unknown. Methods and analysis Part&Sed is a research project based on an observational study design with 6 and 12 months of follow-ups in stroke survivors. In addition, a qualitative analysis of the impact of the stroke on the stroke survivor, validation of the Satisfaction with Daily Occupation-Occupati...

Effect of informed consent on patient characteristics in a stroke thrombolysis trial
Conclusions: Patients recruited by proxy consent were older, had more severe strokes, and had higher prevalence of aphasia than those with capacity to give personal consent. Variations in the manner of consent across countries may influence trial results. Stroke Knowledge in the EstEPA Project, a Population-Based Study
Stroke knowledge is poor in the general population worldwide. Yet, data from Spanish-Speaking populations, particularly in Latin America, are scant. We aim to evaluate stroke awareness using personal interviews in a population-based study.

Cell-Based Therapies for Stroke: Promising Solution or Dead End? Mesenchymal Stem Cells and Comorbidities in Preclinical Stroke Research
Conclusion The high prevalence of comorbidities in patients with stroke indicates the need for therapies in preclinical studies that take into account these comorbidities in order to avoid failures in translation to the patient. Preclinical studies are beginning to evaluate the efficacy of MSC treatment in stroke associated with comorbidities, especially hypertension, for ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke. Regarding aging and diabetes, only ischemic stroke studies have been performed. For the moment, few studies have been performed and contradictory results are being reported. These contradictory results may be due to the u...

Stroke Dysbiosis Index (SDI) in Gut Microbiome Are Associated With Brain Injury and Prognosis of Stroke
Conclusions: We developed an index to measure gut microbiota dysbiosis in stroke patients; this index was significantly correlated with patients' outcome and was causally related to outcome in a mouse model of stroke. Our model facilitates the potential clinical application of gut microbiota data in stroke and adds quantitative evidence linking the gut microbiota to stroke. Introduction Ischemic stroke imposes a heavy burden on society, with 24.9 million cases worldwide (1). Although intravenous thrombolysis and endovascular treatment greatly improve some patients' prognosis, the prognosis for most pa...

A Post-hoc Study of D-Amino Acid Oxidase in Blood as an Indicator of Post-stroke Dementia
In conclusion, our data support that plasma DAO levels were increased in PSD patients and correlated with brain WMH, independent of age, gender, hypertension, and renal function. Plasma DAO levels may therefore aid in PSD diagnosis. Introduction Stroke is a risk factor for both vascular dementia and Alzheimer's disease (1, 2). Functional recovery develops over the course of 26 weeks after a stroke (3), but the survivors are often left with disabilities. In addition to the sequelae of acute neuronal damage, the 1-year post-stroke dementia (PSD) rates after first-ever and recurrent stroke are ~10 and 30...

Clinical Improvement Following Stroke Promptly Reverses Post-stroke Cellular Immune Alterations
Conclusions: SIIA are detectable on admission of acute stroke patients. While it was assumed that post-stroke immunosuppression is rapidly reversed with improvement this is the first data set that shows that improvement actually is associated with a rapid reversal of SIIA demonstrating that SIIA require a constant signal to persist. The observation that HMGB-1 serum concentrations were similar in improved and non-improved cohorts argues against a role for this pro-inflammatory mediator in the maintenance of SIIA. Serum miRNA observed to be regulated in stroke in other publications was counter regulated with improvement in ...
