I just got back from the North Dakota Mission: Lifeline STEMI and Acute Stroke Conference in Bismark, ND. I had a great time and I learned a lot. I often get asked to speak in various venues about acute STEMI and 12-lead ECG interpretation, but for this conference they wanted me to talk mostly about stroke. Bayesian methods to determine performance differences and to quantify variability among centers in multi-center trials: the IHAST trial
Conclusions: Bayesian hierarchical methods allow for determination of whether outcomes from a specific center differ from others and whether specific clinical practices predict outcome, even when some centers/subgroups have relatively small sample sizes. In the IHAST no outlying centers were found. The estimated variability between centers was moderately large.

What are Some Risk Factors for Hypoxic-Ischemic Encephalopathy Outcomes?
Discussion “Neonatal encephalopathy, manifesting as altered responsiveness, seizures, apnea and abnormal muscle tone and reflexes, resulting from hypoxic-ischemic injury is termed hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE).” Neonatal encephalopathy can be associated with other problems including stroke, hemorrhage, infection, pre-term brain injury and hypoglycemia as some examples.
