Metabolic syndrome (MetS) predisposes individuals to cardiovascular disease or stroke development. We aimed at evaluating the prevalence of MetS in a population of acute ischemic stroke (IS) patients from central Poland and at estimating the relationship between MetS and stroke risk.

Strong Improvement of Apolipoprotein E/Low-Density Lipoprotein Receptor Signals by Telmisartan in Poststroke Spontaneously Hypertensive Stroke Resistant
Conclusions: These findings suggest that both low and high doses of telmisartan prevented the activation of ApoE/LDL-R in SHR-SR after tMCAO, and that the antimetabolic effect was regarded as the most important mechanism with few additional benefits by lowering BP in this transient stroke model.

Metabolic Syndrome Predicts Refractoriness to Intravenous Thrombolysis in Acute Ischemic Stroke
Background: Metabolic syndrome (MetS) has been associated with higher resistance to clot lysis at 24 hours after tissue plasminogen activator (tPA) administration in patients with acute ischemic stroke. We aimed to test this hypothesis at earlier time points, when neurointerventional rescue procedures may still be indicated to achieve arterial recanalization. Methods: This is a prospective and observational study in consecutive stroke patients with MCA occlusion treated with IV tPA. MetS was diagnosed following the unified criteria of the last Joint Interim Statement 2009 participating several major organizations.

We were interested to read the paper entitled “Metabolic Syndrome and the Risk of Ischemic Stroke” that was published by Sarrafzadegan et al in Journal of Stroke and Cerebrovascular Diseases in 2016.1 They assessed the predictive value of metabolic syndrome (MetS) and its components for stoke among the Iranian population. They concluded tha t MetS and its main components can be potent predictors for long-term ischemic stroke.1

Long-term Amelioration of Telmisartan on Metabolic Syndrome-related Molecules in Stroke-resistant Spontaneously Hypertensive Rat after Transient Middle Cerebral Artery Occlusion
We examined the effects of telmisartan on metabolic syndrome-related molecules such as insulin receptor (IR), peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPAR-γ), and angiotensin 2 type 1 receptor (AT1R) in stroke-resistant spontaneously hypertensive rat (SHR-SR) after transient middle cerebral artery occlusion (tMCAO), by administering telmisartan at either 0 (vehicle), .3 mg/kg/day (low dose), or 3 mg/kg/day (high dose), postoperatively, from 3 months of age and performed immunohistologic analysis at 6, 12, and 18 months of age.
