Risk profile, clinical presentation, and determinants of stroke subtypes among patients with stroke admitted to public referral hospitals, Northwest Ethiopia in 2021: A cross-sectional study
ConclusionAge, the level of sedentary physical activity, absence of a family history of chronic illness, hypertension, and past stroke were independent determinants of stroke subtype.

Admission Rates, Time Trends, Risk Factors, and Outcomes of Ischemic and Hemorrhagic Stroke From German Nationwide Data
DISCUSSION: Despite recent advances in acute stroke care over the last decade, the percentage of stroke hospitalizations resulting in death remained unchanged. Further research is needed to determine how best to optimize stroke care pathways for multimorbid patients.PMID:36332988 | DOI:10.1212/WNL.0000000000201259

Cardiovascular outcomes and mortality after incident ischaemic stroke in patients with a recent cancer history
CONCLUSIONS: After incident ischaemic stroke, patients with recent cancer history have a lower risk of composite MACE and recurrent stroke outcomes but a higher risk of all-cause mortality when compared with patients without a prior history of cancer.PMID:36549951 | DOI:10.1016/j.ejim.2022.12.006

Clinical significance of obstructive sleep apnea in patients with acute coronary syndrome with or without prior stroke: a prospective cohort study
ConclusionsAmong ACS patients, the presence of OSA was associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular events in patients with prior stroke. Further trials exploring the efficacy of OSA treatment in high-risk patients with ACS and prior stroke are warranted.Trial registration Clinicaltrials.gov identifier NCT03362385.

Predictive Risk Factors of In-Hospital Mortality Following Acute Stroke in the United States: Data from the Nationwide Inpatient Database, 2006-2010 (P02.015)
CONCLUSIONS: The rate of in-hospital mortality is relatively high following acute stroke (8.42%). We identified multiple risk factors of in-hospital mortality in acute stroke patients. The strongest risk factor is the type stroke (hemorrhagic). The present finding suggests that patients at increased risk of mortality can be identified and additional treatment for prevention might be warranted.Disclosure: Dr. Naderi has nothing to disclose. Stroke After Primary Percutaneous Coronary Intervention in Patients With ST-Segment Elevation Myocardial Infarction: Timing, Characteristics, and Clinical Outcomes Coronary Artery Disease
Conclusions— Stroke is an infrequent complication in the setting of ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction treated with primary PCI but is associated with increased morbidity and mortality. Studies to determine mechanisms that may be responsible for strokes that occur >48 hours from primary PCI are warranted. Clinical Trial Registration— URL: http://www.clinicaltrials.gov. Unique identifier: NCT00091637.

Epidemiologic features, risk factors, and outcome of sepsis in stroke patients treated on a neurologic intensive care unit
Conclusions: Sepsis seems to be a frequent complication of stroke patients requiring neurologic ICU treatment. Predictors of sepsis acquisition in our study were comorbidities and severity of deterioration of physiological status, but not stroke severity. A better understanding of risk factors is important for prevention and early recognition, whereas knowledge of outcome may help in prognosis prediction. Further studies are needed to clarify the optimal preventive treatment for these patients.

Stroke And Cerebrovascular Risk Factors Knowledge In Patients Admitted To A Cardiovascular Ward. (P1.135)
Conclusion: Even in these selected population, with previous or current CVD, a large amount of RF and a high rate of previous medical consultations, knowledge about stroke showed to be very low indicating a poor quality of preventive measures and the need to emphasize educational interventions.Disclosure: Dr. Muñoz has nothing to disclose. Systemic Inflammation Exacerbates Stroke in Patients with Left Ventricular Assist Device (P4.235)
CONCLUSIONS:In LVAD patients, total prevention of cerebrovascular complications cannot be accomplished only by adjusting warfarin dosage to meet the therapeutic range. However, recognition of increased CRP and appropriate management of inflammation prior to the stroke onset may enable us to avoid its aggravation and secure patient’s opportunity for heart transplantation.Disclosure: Dr. Ohtomo has nothing to disclose. Tako-tsubo syndrome as a consequence and cause of stroke.
Authors: Bersano A, Melchiorre P, Moschwitis G, Tavarini F, Cereda C, Micieli G, Parati E, Bassetti C Abstract Since tako-tsubo syndrome (TS) frequently appears soon after stroke (usually stroke involving the insular cortex), it is believed to be a consequence rather than a cause of stroke. Herein, we describe a 70-year-old woman presenting with a left middle cerebral artery stroke (involving the insular cortex) who developed a further contralateral ischemic stroke with concomitant detection of a transient intracardiac mural thrombus attributable to TS. It can reasonably be maintained that that in our patient insul...

Cost of Acute Stroke Care for Patients with Atrial Fibrillation Compared with Those in Sinus Rhythm
Conclusion Direct medical costs of acute stroke care for patients with AF may be 50 % greater than for patients without. Economic studies should take this into account to ensure the benefits of anticoagulants are not underestimated.

Ischemic stroke and heart failure: facts and numbers
Abstract Heart failure (HF) is pandemic in the modern society. Comorbidities of HF come increasingly to the fore in today's patient presentation and demand multidisciplinary treatment concepts. Ischemic stroke is a major comorbidity in HF patients and frequently contributes to the adverse outcome and functional dependency. Patients with HF are two‐fold to three‐fold more likely to suffer an ischemic stroke, have more than two times higher mortality and show worse functional outcome after stroke compared with non‐HF subjects. The risk of recurrent stroke is about two‐fold elevated in patients with HF. The risk of st...

Stroke After Left Ventricular Assist Device Implantation: Outcomes in the Continuous-Flow Era
Conclusions Stroke while on CF-LVAD support was associated with significant mortality. To reduce the risk of stroke, it is essential to further elucidate risk factors, to optimize anticoagulation, and to further understand the impact of LVAD-related infections.
